Here's something else to think about. Electron flow is not current. In a wire, the current flows at nearly the speed of light. But the electrons move at, say, a millimeter per second. (Actually, they move much, much faster than that as they whiz around in their orbitals. But the net drift of the electrons is a snail's pace.)
Electrons flow from the more negative potential to the more positive. Work must be exercised to rid electrons thus creating a 'positive' potential which is really the absence of electrons. Loose electrons in a more negative material will be drawn towards the more positive material.
Intuition makes many think the opposite is really happening, we have a 'higher' potential' object and abundance of ground potential materials, so intuitively it was/can be thought that the flow is from positive to negative as the positive potential created the observed effects
