Hi all. this thread has been interesting reading. I was raking through my small collection of valves, looking for an EF80 for a mate and found an Osram Z729 (England). I google'd it for an ID and found this thread.

One option if you like to purchase NOS tubes is a 6BR7. A low noise audio pentode which is extremely close to an EF86.
Different pin out.

Here in the UK Brimar NOS 6br7's can still be had for a pound or two. They are often seen as the CV4006, a lower noise military version. I aquired about a dozen CV4006's ( made by Brimar ) from an ex phone company engineer so probably were used in our phone exchanges. The different pin-out is not a problem when building from scratch.

I received around 25 NOS EF86’s recently. Most are Philips, Volvo, BEL, Siemens and Tungsram. One of these is an “unknown’ brand. The pic is attached. It’s construction is different to others. Came in a white box. Can someone ID this particular tube.

This unknown brand looks like Chinese copy of Russian 6J32P (6Ж32П)

I'm surely going to fry in hell for saying this but I cannot justify $500 for a pair of them. If money was no object I would gladly shell out the money for them. I'm needing something that will sound ok for less money.

What is reasonably priced? I have some NOS Siemens/Telefunken ef804 tubes if you're interested. The pinout is different, but they're quieter and more rugged.

Maybe I'm missing an important point you didn't specify... But....
Have you tried a tube store? I'm finding them for about $40.00 each at any random tube store.. As low as about $18.00 each at some places.
