Drive NOS AD1865/62,PCM1704/02/63,TDA1541 from FIFO: Universal I2S-PCM driver board

HI Ian. For those (like me) who would like to setup two dacs, one NOS and one not NOS and have FIFO for both, do you know if you will offer another batch of FIFO boards for the current GB that's labeled "if it happens"? Thanks.

I can still supply part of those who on the FIFO waiting list for this time, but I don't think I have enough to supply whole waiting list. If more people want, I may consider order more new PCB for next time.

Nice weekend

Ian

I'm one of them in waiting list of FIFO and this i2s-pcm driver board for quite a long time, hope I can get both of them to build my own NOS PCM 1704 DAC!

Thanks Ian!

...On the other hand I have a question about powering Dual XO and I2S-to-PCM board.
I'm wondering if FIFO 5 VDC output could fed Dual XO and I2S-to-PCM together
Yes, it can fed both. Have a look here how Ian connected them together: I2S-PCM board fed from Dual XO . You may note he used the Si570 clock board but Dual XO can be connected similarly. Dual XO is fed through the FFC cable (the white one) and I2S-PCM is fed from Dual XO's 2pin power connector.

Zsolt

AFAIK, DualXO has not a VDC output. It has J5 for optional VDC Input.
As you said, it seems that Dual XO eats power from FFC cable.
I could fed the I2S-PCM from FIFO 5VDC output !!

Regards !

DualXO J5 is connected through FB L11 and the FFC cable to FIFO's J5 - that's why on DualXO "FB L11 has to be removed to use this DC power input. Leave J5 open for normal applications." (from DualXOclockBoardV1.0.pdf)

As you can see on Ian's setup he used DualXO's J5 to power the I2S-PCM and FIFO's J5 to power (one side of) an isolator.
If you don't have an isolator between FIFO and DualXO you can use either FIFO's J5 or DualXO's J5 (since they are basically the same) to power the I2S-PCM.

Zsolt

Hi Ian,

I get the I2S-to-PCM board yesterday!

Zsolt gave most good answers, I just add some information about the FIFO power output.

The 5V DC output on FIFO board actually connected to its DC6V input through a passive CLC filter. So, the output current is 99% up to what input power supply you are using.

For testing there is no any problem using FIFO power output. But for real listening, it's highly suggested to use an isolator between FIFO and clock board, and let clock board and PCM board share a same low noise power supply or battery, or power them separately.

Regards,

Ian

Ouch! I have an isolator for Amanero, but I don't have :eek: one for FIFO-XO interface !!

must I to suscribe to GBV for a Finished FIFO isolator board 2.5? :deer:

Luis.

352.8 KHz music was playing on both NOS TDA1541A and PCM1704 without any problem. With higher Fs, they sound more analog. I have to say, TDA1541A sounds wonderful. I never thought it can sound like this way, with much higher Fs, it sounds very impressed.

(...)

Unfortunately I can’t find any working software based real time up-sampling apps which can go up to 384 KHz so far for both Mac and PC, any recommendation?
Ian

Ian,

Do you prefered sound of TDA1541A over PCM1704 in this test?

If you want to upsample to 384kHz you can use SoX Resampler as a foobar plugin - you have to enter '384000' manually to 'Target samplerate'. SoX is one of the best resamplers by the way.

As a thought, jump on the Korg site and download their software for the MR-2000S, if you have a twitter account allgood, then download a dsd file from Blue Coast and resample it to what ever you like. That way you arent recreating samples but sampling direct from a 2.882 or 5.6 MHz original.

Just a thought...

cheers Ian,

got the new pcm board! many thanks, it looks splendid!

It seems that I need some advice or help with connecting it with Amanero and TDA1541 dac from Oliver.
Need to say that Amanero + TDA alone work fine.

the PCM board and TDA are connected as stated in the manual, jumper is set to JOB.
Amanero and PCM are connected in the following way:

MCLK -> MCLK
BCLK -> SCK
FSCLK -> WS
Data -> Data
Ground -> Ground

all three leds are glowing, so connection should be correct I assume.
DL and DR output pins are soldered directly to TDA chip.
BCK also goes directly to TDA chip.
LLLR is connected through 1N4148 diode as stated for -ecdesigns- latest 3.3.v i2s modification.

Unfortunately on the output of my DAC I get huge distortions, what could it be? Tried to set the board at half speed, no difference.
