Drive NOS AD1865/62,PCM1704/02/63,TDA1541 from FIFO: Universal I2S-PCM driver board

Hello Ian,
if you are interested, I've a AD1865n-J dac and a SDTrans 192 reader that a I normally use with Sabre Dacs.
SDTrans I2S limit is 384Khz 32bit so I can test easily every format you like.

My AD1865 dac have EIAJ input that at the moment is directely connected to a Nec Multispin CD reader.
If I can help, I'm here. The dac is very easy and I can also rebuild a proto board for tests.
Ciao
Guglielmo

Are PMD100 outputs reclocked before connecting to PCM1704?
- If no: go to the below suggestion
- If yes: probably doable with some modification - removing components/cutting traces - that you might not want to do...

Is PMD100 on socket?
- If yes: take it out gently and you are ready to plug-in NOS PCM board outputs via a pin-header(or similar)
- If no: consider adding one :)

Obviously its feasible technically but makes little sense, I could remove the entire digital section and possible fit the fifo inside, but best to just start fresh from scratch, just need to make some boards to hold the PCM1704's and caps and hook up a SE I/V, much more sensible than re-casing a 25 lbs $2k classic commercial DAC. Anyone have a Eagle libary with the PCM1704 ?

Ian - please let me know if I can be of any help in your project here.

I got a little DAC just to test this concept for myself. It is an Audio-gd DAC19MK3. I chose it as it has a removable digital board (right middle below). This board currently has a DF1704 to spit out Right justified data to one PCM1704 per channel. The board simply lifts out leaving a standard socket for a CAT6 copper data cable to plug in.

Hi kazap

Thank you so much for offering help. I'll let you know if I need some helps from you.

Have a nice weekend.

Confirmed TDA1541A works fine with the PCM daughter board from 44.1 to 192 KHz

I just came across getting a TDA1541A DAC board, so I can confirm the daughter board TDA1541A logic by myself.

TDA1541A configurations:
Pin27 connected to -5V (VDD1): simultaneous mode
Pin1 LE to LLLR
Pin2 BCK to CLK
Pin3 DATAL to DL
Pin4 DATAR to DR

I2S to PCM daughter board configurations:
JOB(IO7) short (offset binary format),
all other jumpers keep open (16bit mode)

Testing went through all the conditions:
Fs: 44.1KHz, 48KHz, 88.2KHz, 96KHz, 176.4KHz, 192KHz,
MCLK: 22.579, 24.576, 45.158, 49.152 MHz,
Without and with FIFO.

It works perfect on all conditions. 192 KHz sounds much better than 44.1 KHz, impressive. This 1541 board used to work with SAA7220P digital filter, so I think it doesn’t have good NOS LPF. That might be one of the reasons. Just hope good software based up-sampling plug-in can boost 44.1K play back perfromance. That’s one of the goals of the I2S to PCM daughter board.

Some comment:
1, Continuous clock mode doesn’t work for TDA1541, has to be at stopped clock mode, no sound otherwise.
2, JTAIL and JLEAD are also no work for TDA1541, Have to keep all of them open.
3, To get better signal quality, u.fl coaxial cables are highly recommended for the connections between DAC and the daughter board

This DAC was just for confirming the PCM daughter board logic working for TDA1541. Just hope somebody else can do more research on it with higher standard 1541 DAC and better clock.

Ian

Hi. I believe I can use this driver board however I'm not sure what I need to remove and or disable in my DAC to integrate it. My DAC chips are CS8414, 74HC04 and AD1865. Would someone give me an idea what would be involved in hooking up this driver board please? Would I need to disconnect the CS8414 for example? I have a basic understanding of these circuit but no knowledge of how to correctly do this.

Thanks,
Adrien.

Hi Adrien

Just curious wich USB-I2S do you have?

Cheers

Felipe

Hi. I'm 'old school' so I don't have one. I have a CEC TL51XR CD player and an Audio Note 4.1x DAC. After reading Ian's project threads and then finding Lorien's XMOS-based Asynchronous USB to I2S interface project, I'd like to try and get USB working. I'd really like to keep the AN DAC as I am pleased with the sound of the DAC. That is where I'm coming from.

Adrien.
