Do loudspeakers wear out?

Hi Graham,
In my experience, so long as speakers are not abused they usually last pretty much forever.
The exceptions to this are foam surrounds that rot, and paper cones going brittle, and glues letting go/cracking.

When subjected to abuse the situation changes.
Overdrive with an underpowered (clipping) amplifier can set up whipping modes in the flex leads to the voice coil, and (metal) fatigue failure of these leads.
Over excursion can also cause the spider to lose its restoring force, and bottoming causing mushrooming of the voicecoil former.

Moist environments can cause corrosion of the plating on the polepieces and consequent voicecoil scraping.
Hot environments (afternoon sun shining on the speaker) can cause premature failure of glues and cone embrittlement, and surrounds failure.

Speakers with doped cloth or rubber surrounds in a kind environment and never abused seem to last pretty much forever.

Eric.
