Make sure the gauge of the wire is "Watt" appropriate, hence why a jack (guitar cable) is no good.
If you go DIY, Mogami and Belden make great cable for this, just do your research and use the right one! As far as 1/4" jacks, just make sure they Anchor to the wire really well as this is a vulnerable stress point and always seem to fail when you have a gig. I also like using silver lead free solder for stressed conections.
