I was talking about any audio or TV tuners. I really do not care what happens to the cable box. You need to break the ground before it hits the first piece of equipment. A 1:1 transformer from a good vendor is the only reasonable way to do this. The cable company may be able to supply this and boost your signal accordingly. Then they are responsible for the quality of signal. It may cost you some money but is worth it.
The hum comes from multiple grounds. Circulating ground currents cause the hum. The earth is used as a return for your electrical power grid and gives rise to potential differentials between ground points. Complete with any waveform distortion. The cable is providing another path for these currents.

I'm currently thinking about using the Creative Labs
DDTS-100 decoder. That will allow me to use the
digital out. Then I can break the ground loop on
the digital audio cable (If necessary).
It will also allow me to use surround sound. I think
the audio DAC in the cable box do not sound very
good anyway.

I checked my second box. It has an optical digital out.
If I use that with the new decoder I've I will isolate my audio equipment from the cable box.
This way I do not have to float my amps. I'm building a new
set of amps (3-4 month time frame). I will consider putting the
diode protection in.

I got the processor. However the box that has the optical
out does not perform as well. It gives occasionally a
high frequncy pop when sh\witching channels. It also
forces my TV to switch input formats. This takes a while
(1-2sc) and is annoying when flipping channels). The digital
input is connected to ground and hums.
So I'm back to floating the power amps. Although they have
been working fine for 7 years I'm still not so happy as they
do have 750V power inside.
