Both versions are "fully functional." One is better for multi-channel, one better for stereo. Incidentally, the SE version has more parts and costs more to build, but we have kept the price the same.

I have always upgraded with each and every buffalo that came out, more for support of TwisstedPear and the fun of building something.

I presently have BIII (running SE) and MUX 4:1 input with lagato (no caps) or IVY II and was waiting for AVCC 2

From what I am reading hear, you are kind of inferring that the BIII SE will be better than BIII set up for SE. Is it because of the new AVCC2 or for other reasons.

Will I get a bump in performance by by getting the BIIISE
If I do looks like I have to replace the Mux4:1 because I do not see a ribbon connector

No, the B-IIIse is just much simpler to set up for stereo use (which is the most common scenario).

It only has one S/PDIF input, so you could not use the 4-channel level converter from the B-III (it's not a MUX, that job is performed by the ES9018).

Hi Russ/Brian, I'm using BII with trident, can I reuse the trident from BII to BIII SE??? upgrading from BII with legato 3 will be just remove and install new BIII SE, all header will be same as before?

Buffula III SE Multichannel

this might be a dumm question (in that case please excuse):

I understand that the Buffalo III SE was build to ease the usage for stereo und mono setups. As the Buffulo III isn't available any more (at the moment), I wonder whether or not the SE version also can be used / setup for multi-channel usage?

Yes, you can. Like the B-III, the B-IIIse is slightly longer than the B-II, but the mounting points are in the same locations.

You could use multiple DACs, handling 1 or 2 channels each.

You can do that, but you will have two different AVCC versions.

Does anyone have suggestions for sizing an enclosure for the Buffalo-IIISE, IVY-III, 4-input SPDIF, Metronome, USB DAC receiver, and power supplies? I would like some "elbow room" for possible other things.
