Break in

What is going on during break in? I must admit, I didn't really believe it until I'm hearing it for myself (could still be psychological since I hear it every day), but now I've had a friend say "what did you change on your system. It sounds better" (and she hasn't heard it every day).

To be honest, it just seems like the mids and highs have been turned down, so the system is more in balance after break in.
So.... is breakin really just the parts loosing some of the ability to pass high frequency info?

I guess I'm wondering if new parts color the sound, then loose that flaw as they age, or is it the opposite? Are the parts electro-mechanically perfect when they are new, and it's the flaws that they develop that are pleasing to our ears?
