Bipole phone speaker?

I've never really torn down a modern phone but wonder if it would be possible to get better LF response out of a common phone by driving the screen and back with a bipolar voice coil. If it could be better enough to warrant the difficulty in rearranging everything..

Possibility exists. A ton of issues to overcome, and would either be DML with no bass, or only capable of LF depending.

Apple does use push=-push (bipole) woofers in many of their computers.

There is no empty space inside the modern phone. Packed with electronics and batteries.

Since the surface area of the screen is significantly larger than that of the regular speaker, the excursion requirements for the same SPL would be smaller. Worth a try in my opinion.

Maybe hack the phone OS to output multiway, through the built-in speakers (for mid-HF) as well as earphone (for LF)? By the way the display glass is dual-layer.

The only time i listen to music on the phone it is as a source.

The best way to do this is... a blue tooth speaker.... or an external DAC with built in battery, an USB-OTG cable and earbuds.

There is NO room inside a modern smart phone. None.

If you could 3D a deeper back shell, then you might be able to mount something there to give you a bit more.... "bass"...

Sure, but I'll put a 24/96 ( minimum ) DAC somewhere in there. The Audio coming out of the phone is not so good.

It's never going to be hifi, and the lack of internal volume would be consequential, and if it helped at all it'd probably take too much power. But I think the magnet assembly could be used to help divide the moving mass equally front and plastic back, so only one coil needed. Also the entire screen assembly would have to be bonded solid for it to work, which I don't think is how it is usually done. Too many problems and just a curiosity.

The screen speaker has been attempted on televisions before. The cellphone display shoudn't be very different from that.

Yeah, but they fit for their intended purpose. I need a center channel to build around two pairs of Acoustic Energies in a 5 channel surround. I plan on using both Tozzi's as center channel.

Sony had a flat screen not so long ago... it was a neat trick, I almost bought it but as any Sony "XBR" it was quite pricey.
