I don't know of any recievers with main-inputs, but this would certainly be a great feature to have. I've got a feeling it would bump your price up significantly.

You have to go at least one unit up from the entry level receiver to get this feature, if offered at all.

eg. NAD. Their entry level T743 retails at AU $1000 and has preouts for all channels, including 2 subwoofer outputs. Their next model up is the T753 which also has line lever amplifier inputs for all channels. This retails at AU $1800.

While you have to pay $AU 800 more, you also lose a lot of power amplifiers, so the receiver becomes a preamp with remote volume control and a processor. I expect that to build the 6 channels that you gain with the more expensive model would cost something similar (assuming 6 x 70w high current discrete class AB amps).

Of course, with different amps this may look different. I have seen a fairly low cost Pioneer receiver with pre-outs. The Marantz SR4300 for only AU $999 has both pre outs and main in. Denon seems to be quite a bit more expensive to get preouts and amp inputs. Yamaha are also a bit more pricey with features like this - AU $1200 last time I checked to get pre outs only.

On a budget the Marantz may be the way to go. However, with a bit more to spend I'd be looking into the NAD.

I think the decision to go active is a very good idea. I always recommend bi-amping for anyone that really has a desire for a true high end loudspeaker system. Are you handy with a soldering iron? If so, you can do this easily, and cheaply. If not, contact the folks below, and they can make you one for less than 1k, for sure. They also have bare 2way boards if you want to load your own (cascade 2 boards for 3 way).

Yes, it's that kxproject enthusiast guy again. According to some posts on the kxproject forum, it may be possible to run up to three soundcards together in one computer, with three stereo outputs per card, and each card running crossovers in hardware dsp. Don't ask me how to do it, I have only one pci slot in the Lunchbox so I'll never know.

Here's one of posts to help you get started, and you can search for user bzdang for more (most of it is just encouragement to try it out).

The kxproject forum is a treasure but much of it has to be filtered and adapted because most of that community is using the system for music production, some also for home theater, very few for loudspeaker crossovers (maybe just me and raka).

ps-
use ver.3537 and get the ufx plugins, 3538 is still under development.
I have the simple delay plugin in case anyone wants it.

- the example that I posted was mono because I had only one tweeter and woofer on hand. 3-way stereo works!

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but I've got another question regarding this project. Let me give you a little background info:

I had planned on moving a PC into my home theater to use for some music and dvd playback, games, etc. Also I plan to build a pair of 3-way active crossed main speakers (read Left and Right) to be used in my theater. I would be using my Hercules Fortissimo III card for audio playback (and the SP/DIF out to my reciever for DD/DTS playback).

Is this possible?:

Install a creative card as well and use the input on the creative card to take the output from my recievers pre-outs for the Left and Right main speakers, and use the kxproject to output that material to the 6 outputs of the creative card and use it as a 3-way stereo crossover, all without disturbing the Hercules Fortissimo setup. To state it another way, I want to use the kxproject with a creative card inside a computer where no other programs would use the creative card, they would all use the Hercules card.

Again, pardon my interruption and thanks for the advice.
