Hi ACD,
Why not this one?
http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LME49710.html
...the single version of the famous LM4562.
(long brake-in, if you believe in such things)
US$3.38 at digikey (but check for free samples at the previous link)

Cheers,

Go,go,go....Why not this one?http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LME49710.html
But the free sampels had a shipping cost that I could have gotten 10-15 of them at digikey...
of course there is no such thing as a universal opamp, and the main groups, fets and BJTs shine under difirent conditions...
Despite graphs etc... my vote goes to opa2132 (the more expensive cousin of opa2134 but it should stll be about $6)
The ONE reason this chip stands out to me is good noise rejection on the inputs.... stuff like PC soundcards.. this has been my cheap chip rolling experience.

For the highest ratio of quality to cost -- NE5532 and NE5534 -- these workhorses can really perform
I second to that.......
though newer and maybe faster opamps are available these days...............
according to my ears regardless of my pocket
NE's are still best speacially in the input side........seconded by TL072's or 74's......
I have earlier been for my opinion, that I think some of the expencive opamps like OPA627 sounds to "sterile"
aaaaaaaahhhhhhh yes,
I do now remember the LYNX.
I've tried every single opamp I had in my drawer from
OPA134PA, OPA627, OPA604,
until I've arrived with LF356 which behaved and sounds that well .......
