fred, sin bin, banning policy
Fred, Harry, whatever you like to be called:
Was shocked to see you banned, glad to have you back in the person of Fred. Was sometimes annoyed by the waste of bandwidth but otherwise enjoyed technical or humorous content or simply ignored some posts. Didn't see any of your alter ego posts except for those by Ren. Sorry to have missed some fun!
There was something my math teacher used to say, back in high school. When we were debating on how to bend the rules on something non-mathematical, he thought he had succeeded in teching us to always look for exceptions and loopholes...
Moderators (I am using this thread as the other one on ban or not was permantently closed):
A society (and this is what this forum has evolved into!) can't live without rules and some enforcement. But I am also troubled by the oligarchic (I do hope this word exists in English) approach taken. Also, looking at the sin bin, I am a little amazed by the prudist approach taken here (temporary bans for offensive language and for posting where to get porn).
Being at home in a few languages and cultures, I am always amazed at the objection that English speaking countries have to seeing "four letter words" (another euphemism) being used in speech, writing, films while at the same time there is such excessive use. In French, German, Italian cultural envonments, they are probably used less frequently, but if they are, people are less likely to see this as a problem...

P.S.: While liberal almost became a four letter word in the U.S. in the early days of the Clinton administration, it has started becoming a synonym for conservative here in Germany. There are two kinds of liberals... If anybody is interested, I'll try to work out the history....
P.P.S.: Whatever happened to Gromanswe? He probably was one of the triggers for installing the moderator thing. I guess no corrective action was taken, he simply left once most members had deciced it was wisest to simply ignore him. Now, what does this tell us....?
