+1 to distortion sounds.

Right ear, usually triggered byt extreme spl, or my youngest daughter crying, even at a distance. Sounds like KRSHSRRRRHKSRRRRHHSSRKKSHRRS!!! Can not hear anything else while it's going on, mental overload. I though it was a hair or something that was in a wrong position, had it checked, Doc did not find anything out of the ordinary. Sound sounds different in my ears, right ear = better at low freq, left ear better at high freq, measures similar. Beginning Tinnitus approaching.

Loud distorted music causes a static in my left ear, much like a TV or radio with no signal, this and other pops, clicks and whistles that no hearing specialist can give me an answer for. Only that my hearing was excellent 10 years ago and getting progressively worse.... :(

My HF issues are bad enough to stop me listening to music. In fact I haven't listened to my hifi for months and months, until I changed my amp. In many ways my 'lofi' computer speakers get more listening time, because they have a single driver and less treble.

Some days a better than others, and on good days my hifi sounds fantastic and I get a lot of enjoyment.

I may need to take steps to reduce the treble on my main system somehow. Maybe a change of speakers or preamp.

I have the ear distortion too. When it first started I kept thinking that I had a rubbing voice-coil on a speaker: it's that sort of distortion. It has now got worse to the extent that I appreciate music less and prefer to listen on good quality headphones.
In my case it is a problem of heredity (so a specialist says) and is caused by groups of the cochlea hairs not functioning, so selective bands of frequencies disappear. My father had the same problems before going almost completely deaf.

The simplest thing that can be done is breathing and pranayam is nothing but breathing and leads to relaxation. U have to try it to believe.

I suspect most of u that have these ear issues have enjoyed high spl music in the early ages and for long duration.

For me it is dog barks. If the dog barks near my left ear, then I hear the bark clearly, but after the bark I hear a crunching noise. The right ear is fine. Glad to see this thread.

The pointer about the tensor tympani is interesting. Wiki paragraph below. Maybe a dog bark is a startle response. The flutter also happens sometime. I hope the pain part never materializes.

When tensed, the action of the muscle is to pull the malleus medially, tensing the tympanic membrane, damping vibration in the ear ossicles and thereby reducing the amplitude of sounds. This muscle is contracted primarily to dampen the noise produced by chewing. (Compare to the more general dampening function of the stapedius muscle.)
In many people with hyperacusis, an increased activity develops in the tensor tympani muscle in the middle ear as part of the startle response to some sounds. This lowered reflex threshold for tensor tympani contraction is activated by the perception/anticipation of loud sound, and is called tonic tensor tympani syndrome (TTTS). In some people with hyperacusis, the tensor tympani muscle can contract just by thinking about a loud sound. Following exposure to intolerable sounds, this contraction of the tensor tympani muscle tightens the ear drum, which can lead to the symptoms of ear pain/a fluttering sensation/a sensation of fullness in the ear (in the absence of any middle or inner ear pathology).[2][3]

Go to doctor and ask to wash your ears!
If ear was is a problem, somtething like this (looks like this brand quit making it, but others make essentially the same thing) will help:
Bausch & Lomb Ear Wax Removal System - 0.5oz
It's a dropper bottle of something that softens ear wax, and a squeeze thingie you fill with warm (not too hot, don't ask how I know) water to rinse out your ears.

you fill with warm (not too hot, don't ask how I know) water

Cold water wouldn't be good either ....... (don't ask how I know). Use a temperature that would also feel good when used for washing your hair for instance.

I too have slight tinnitus on one side (from an infection) and I also have the tensor tympani causing low frequency hum once in a while. But it is all within limits that aren't too annoying.

Noise and distortion could also come from remaining dead tissue that is stuck within the middle ear after an infection.

once you're past 30, the direction your body is heading becomes more obvious

From my observations (not counting the ear problems) the direction became obvoius at around 50, and the knee in the curve began at about 55. I am still doing my best to fight the inevitable decline though.

Don't worry of the scientific proof.....yeah, this is diyaudio alright LOL

No, really......I made these cables.....they can cure all sorts of ear problems...just send $1995......but wait there's more......:)

Sorry, just had to say it.

Go to some Yoga teacher.

They had Yoga classes in our workplace gym a few years ago. I went for a while, but had trouble with most of the routines. My body isn't the type suited for many of the positions, I'm too bulky. Sadly many of the specialty classes have been discontinued since all of the layoffs have cut the enrolment. There isn't enough people left to hold the classes.

Great thread! I occasionally suffer from this phenomenon, too.

This is spot on for me. Inside the car with radio and road noise, or extended headphone listening, or bad PA systems, or my kids being really loud, especially in the highly reverberant tile-and-tub bathroom. It is really uncomfortable. There seems to be a threshold of SPL over time, and I can sense when it is about to go past the threshold by a "tighening" feeling in my ears.

I've discovered that it is more likely to happen if I have excess pressure in my ears/sinuses due to allergy or virus. Antihistamines (I have lots of allergies to different pollens and molds so have to take allergy meds most of the year) and decongestants help.

For me it is certainly SPL related, as extended loud sound will make it happen as well as sudden really loud sound.

Someone has to have a technical, physiological term for this!

Happy safe listening! ;)

U cannot go for the Yoga poses after 30. Google pranayam and select the easiest of them u can. These are mostly breathing ways with easy postures.

Or the simplest u can do is breathe out heavily for 3 to 5 times twice a day, on empty stomach or one hour after any food.

I am not trying to teach anything here. Would have been best if u could purchase Baba Ramdev's yoga video cd.
