Although I have not built one, it would seem as if the supply to the active circuit is 60V from the series regulator.

thank you. I am guessing the string of zeners acts as reference for the series regulator chip?

I thought zen where power amps. And I was talking about preamps.

Go and read those articles as Magura says they also include preamps plus the benefit of the author which is no less than Nelson Pass instead of hearing bits an pieces from all of us.
They are free for you to download, what more could you ask?
