Hi Guys

Vostro, that is a good question.

There are no differences between these pairs that will effect performance in an audio amplifier. The 5/6 pair has ESD ratings and qualifications regarding its case materials. Otherwise, the only claimed electrical difference is a 50mA higher current rating at 80Vce.

There are some differences in how the graphs are presented suggesting that the 3/4 pair has very slightly lower capacitance despite the tabled data being the same for both pairs.

Have fun

Thanks for all your thoughts/replies. They've help me narrow down my search for a design. I think I will save the 2SC3281/2SA1302 pairs for a future project. Some of your replies have shown that I have a few gaps in my knowledge. Best start with a simple design like ESP's Project 83 -Mosfet power follower with the suggested DOZ preamp.
I can bread board most of it at first to iron out any wrinkles.

I have some IRF type mosfet's in my junk box as well of and have a big iron core I can wind a mains transformer to provide 2 x 40v for the main amp and seperate secondaries for the 2 x 40v supply for the preamp.

I have most of the equipment I,ll need; lamp limiter and variac , sig gen and scope and several analogue and digital meters.

Here's some pics of the transistors in question. AFAIK Pioneer are still using these transitors in current domestic kit, like the VSX series of recievers etc. Therefor they must still be making them.

Here also is pics of some other vintage transistors ( Mullard 8 New x 29'sOC, Hitachi 2SB337's and some early Sony 2SC895's I have stashed as well as a huge 80v 10A Partridge transformer which could make an interesting amp.

Thanks again for all your input,Andy.

No, the 2sa/c went obsolete about 20years ago.
Their replacements went obsolete nearly ten years ago.

I think Toshiba obsoleted purely to outfox the fakers.

But faking seems to be big business and some big business is prepared to invest in any illegal methods to generate profit.
