My_Ref Fremen Edition - Build thread and tutorial

Hi there! Guess what... I still have to complete mine.
I'm posting this just 'cause I still lurk eagerly this thread... And making some excuses, since I bothered quite someone here.
In the while I started building:
* destroyed a BD13916STU, still have to buy it... :(
* moved from Turin to Ancona, where I bought house for the family
* then started travelling between Rome, Ancona and Turin for work
* my second daughter was born ...

..and, last but not least, when I got the cabinet finished, it failed the WAF test: the dark style wasn't that good really with white oak furnitures... :( So I'll have to replan a smaller and whiter cabinet.
So, keep posting - I'm still on WIP... :D

Ancona? Then we got much much closer now. Interesting thing...

I have no idea why it has taken my amp so long to come on form, but anyway, it now sounds fabulous! It's hard to know if taking a few months to reach this level of performance is a phsycological or a real effect, but to be honest I don't care.

If you have Blackgates in C9 it could be normal, someone said over 500 hours burn-in...

Thanks to Dario for a wonderful amp!

You're welcome :)

I'm happy that your build finally started to sound as it should, fantastic ;)

Is this still valid or you changed your mind, at the end?

More recently I built an audiophile cost-no-object BOM version of the My-Ref FE. The sound was promising, but not quite to my taste. I then set about some system optimisations to get better synergy with the FE and finally got it sounding very good.
(...)
Ayway I have been listening to my GT101 "rev D" for the last 3 days and I don't feel any need to revert to the MyRef or my KT88 PP amp or any of my other DIY amps. That's a pretty good sign.

mod jfet-opamp by JosephK

For a long time I own MyRef Fremen Ed. (EVO Revision A few months ago) with all the improvements offered by Dario (z-foil resistors R7 R10 R12 R37, Mundorf MLytic AG and Supreme C13, Cerafine C9 etc.) over time . It was and is still a wonderful amplifier for me. In my setup I use a built-in DAC based on the PCM1704 chip, passive Lightspeed DIY attenuator and Diapason Adamantes II loudspeakers.
My post is now a very positive feedback regarding the mod proposed by George in the ways suggested in his post at p. 309 ,with the only difference I wanted to use the OPA827 (C32 corrected to 100pF) instead of the 4627 that he proposes.
I was very happy with the result of listening to the LM318 but I have to say that the current setup with the 827 has made an impressive leap of quality to this amplifier. Detail, timbre finish, acoustic scene, in short every aspect of the reproduction makes a leap forward. Fine grain and vitality are the most important attributes and maintains the typical charm of the LM318.
Nice Shot!!:D
I notice that in my device detecting the output offset I was struck by the measure.... I am returning: 1mV for both channels ... sic! .

Dear Giovanni,

Very nice to hear. Especially that You have resolved all by yourself and it went smooth.
Ok, we know that you are not exactly a beginner 😆 Did you swap out in the original module or is it
the new build?
And we both have tha same chip at our service (opa827)
A very good choice if you ask me.. ☺

Now if you only would have a good dac in front.. Oops but you have one!

My New DAC PCM1704+AD844

...Your merit ... it was very clear what to do and why to do it

...an experienced donkey(..just for the ears):p.

...certainly the new build will accompany me for a looong time;)

...yes very good....and I'm grateful to you and Dario[/QUOTE]

:Dyou're right ... I've tried a bit of everything in the I/V section
but there is a recent novelty ... still secret .... in the analog section that along with this mod with the 827 on the Fremen takes off the sound.

I have already produced the pcb for friends

ghiglie,

You know you are welcome here. As for life getting in the way of projects, I can relate. Most of us can. Happily, I don't have a WAF problem, or as a friend said it, "The Art Department always has veto power."

Jac

Your friend is definitely right, Jac.
Well, I'm moving to Rome for some weeks, so during the weekday I can manage some ironing.
BTW, sometimes ago I put together a pair of remote triggers, quite never put in production for the reasons above.... I'd check if they still work...

I have shown recently, the evolution of the distortion performance at different stages of the design.
The clear visible step between classic and rev-A compensation is in a nice part due to the R3 changed.

For stabilty it is probably less critical. Did not do a deep investigation. Don't see a reason for it..

Ciao, George

I mean: raising the value of R3 lowers the gm, the conversion factor of the current pump. So it brings more stabilty ( less loop gain)
So it is a change which brings .more stability, at the price of less performance and more circuit losses. If Mauro had decided to use less of it, he considered worthwile - why should we explore backwards..
