Active crossover question

Hello everyone,

This is my first attempt to build speakers so please excuse me if my question is naive. So far I have build back loaded horns using tangbang 8" full range speaker. They turned out excellent but now I want to add some bottom end. My dream was to build jbl l300 so I have some jbl 2235h woofers and I want to build the cabinets for the l300 and I thought I will make the l300 cabinets and use them with 2235h's as my subwoofers for my horns. My question is I guess is what do you guys think of this and any suggestions for an activ crossover.

Thank you

Hi Minus,

I'm not familiar with JBL drivers very much, except their prices. :)

However, not sure what you are asking about your crossover. The default go-to around here is miniDSP, which have a number of DSP functions, including time delay, EQ, and filtering.

To use them appropriately means you'll have to be able to measure your drirer frequency response so you get the correct combination of settings.

Best,

-E

You may or may have luck with the MiniDSP. For myself, I found it to sound quite veiled and removed some of the dynamics and liveliness from my active setup, especially when using vinyl playback..I did use it to the extent that I figured out the proper x-over points for my system and then switched to an appropriately configured Marchand crossover which does the job quite a bit better, IMO.

Would that have been with the earlier 2x4? My understanding is that the new 2x4HD is a substantial step forward, particularly considering that either rudimentary REW can be included in the system solution at no /low extra cost, or full blown DIRAC if your wallet was some cushion.

What do you use as source/s? If just a computer, there is a lot to be gained from digital crossovers, time alignment, and room correction. People use either Dirac (easier to implement, but limited and expensive) and Acourate (very flexible hence more complicated, and cheaper). I use Acourate and very happy. Doing a 2-way xo would be rather easy so don't be put off by that.

Time alignment would be important when trying to align horns.

Disregard what I said! I pressed submit and then opened the picture you included. Sources answered! :D

I agree---the Mini DSP seems like an excellent tool to figure out what works best, and then use an analog implementation. The (inexpensive) analog-to-digital-to-analog conversions just produce too much noise and distortion.
P.S. LOVE those horns!!!

Given the marchand is a fairly basic textbook op-amp crossover that lacks what many would consider basic active crossover features I am suprised you didn't like the miniDSP. However it is very easy to get things like gain structure wrong with MiniDSP. Also of course some people think that an AD/DA conversion MUST mess up the sound.

Well, I suppose it doesn't necessarily. But it sure does in the Mini DSP. It's damn noisy, for one thing.
I tried a Reckhorn DSP-6, and found that to be the same. I was going to use it as a parametric equaliser, then tweak my current passive crossovers to suit, but the noise floor was so high I couldn't live with it!
And as to active crossovers, I have used a Ben Duncan designed analogue active on and off for over 30 years years. It has served me well over the years, analogue works for me!

You're onto something, here. I think what many of us object to is the sound of reconverted signals; once the signal is in the analog domain, I want it to stay there.

The only 'affordable' DSP I've heard that felt natural was used with a Linkwitz LX521. It's necessarily complicated, with each driver driven by a dedicated processor and amp.

The new Kii design follows a similar approach.

Neither of these allow me to use an amp of my choosing, which is a commitment I think many of us won't make.

In my opinion, DSP will become widely adopted when it is a 'front end' solution that allows users to keep their current amp and speakers.

Well, firstly, the LX521 uses ANALOG signal processing, NOT digital.
One of the big advantages of DSPs is to facilitate bi-amping, which is a HUGE step forward. You CAN use an existing amp---just add another. Your speaker drivers can also be utilized---just eliminate the unneeded parts of the crossover.
