But, of course it will cost a lot. So does a Patek-Philippe Grand watch etc etc etc. I dont care if only wealthy can afford the best. Is that a reason that it should not be done? Pls.

A Patek Grand Complication is a wonderful demonstration of mechanical complexity but actually doesn't represent any forward movement in timekeeping technology. I think thats also true of both many of the supercars (over $500K toys for rich old men trying to recapture a lost youth) and other "exotic" baubles for the bourgeois.

Thats possibly true to some extent. But the point is that quality is One componenet... pushing the tech spec is another. I want to see a fully flushed out and SOTA in quality, construction, design and the whole thing... not a piece here and there.

You dont build a piece of a supercar... you attempt to do the whole integrated gizmo as very best you can manage.

From my view over the bridge of my nose, we in Audio (compared to other industries) are at fair to good level. We try at DIYAudio to raise that to the Better level, only.

We have no BEST level the way others do.

From my perspective this issue is extremely divisive. If a group came forward to advance the SOTA but excluded all garbage physics simply chaos would ensue. I've tried it, I can't work with people that truly believe a bigger 1K resistor has less Johnson noise.

There is no best car and can't be. For road track an F1 car has excellent performance, but not good for a day out shopping, or for going to a vacation cabin in the woods.

You want a best hi-fi? A 2-speaker stereo for a room at home? Need to include the room as part of the system design?

At least for a reproduction system, a reasonable starting point might be a DAC with the required number of channels. Likewise for a preamp. After that it would seem to depend a lot on other particulars.

Defining "best" is the first step. The list above doesn't do it well and some qualities are at the expense of others. Further "best" only has meaning in context. Best car for picking up groceries vs. a trip across Baja. Neither would be ideal for touring the UK or a trip around Nurburgring.

Audio is no less broad in application. A system for Simon's stadiums just would not work in my living room. Its not big enough to fit all the wire.

This curmudgeon spent an hour tonight trying to change his windows path variable and getting it to stick, I succeeded, a small victory.

:D

Richard--the "best" cell phone is also a subjective measure. What sort of UX works best for you? My 6'3" uncle is a mountain of a man and he enjoys having a Iphone 6s plus ergonomically, which to me is basically a cumbersome tablet. We all have different objectives here.

The closest thing I can get (going off a digital source) is some sort of low-noise (EMI and pure SNR horsepower) all-in-one system that runs the DSP/dacs. Coupled to a set of low-distortion, low-noise, low-gain (gain should come up front to maintain SNR through the chain) amplifiers with enough heft to be secondarily used for arc welding should do the trick. Expensive, but all well within reach. I'd hope you'd be able to keep at least an SNR of 110 dB throughout using SOTA devices. Recommend using those horrible, horrible modern opamps in a few, key locations, (even if you use a current-output DAC buffered with a floating-supply common-gate I-V stage a la EUVL, you'll probably want a good buffered output afforded by a nice opamp + buffer, bonus points for a composite :D)

Speakers, go talk to Kindhornman, I'm out of my league. :)

I'm sorry to say that you guys are clueless as to what it takes to make really great audio electronics. The original purpose of this thread, more than 10 years ago was about how to build a world class preamp. We were successful for the first hundred pages or so. Perhaps if you looked back to those early pages (part 1) you would understand what Richard and I are interested in discussing.

I don't think I do. Overwhelmingly, you see here that designs are specified like 'I have these OPA1234 opamps and great Dale resistors, please help me to design a preamp with them'. Spec the design, accept (whatever) the performance comes out of it. The road to (audio) hell.

NASA does something like 'build me something that can bring 2 persons at max 180 lbs each into earth orbit with 5 days life support and return on a max 4000 ft runway'. And then accept whatever the design looks like eventually. The road to (space) heaven.

The latter is usually called 'engineering'. The first is universally known as 'fashion design'. ;-)

The mission for audio design is to "make it please me, just me, in the most subjective way possible while not being an eye sore." You can't design that like NASA designs stuff with anywhere near our current understanding of perception on sound.

satisfaction of the customer, designer, manufacturer and dealer - what is wrong with it? Everybody involved wins

Could not agree more.. and furthermore it gives hordes of people something to bitch about like they were forced to buy it. Most of it feels like a form of jealously...

Honestly I believe there's more, and more confrontational, snobs of overall design and especially related to price and finish on this forum than among any rich people purchasing audio gear. Some rich people are afraid to buy inexpensive products because may it won't be as good, but at least they are contributing to economies besides China (and for that matter that respect IP). I've found the snobbery to be so bad on this board that I acquired a stalker because they thought I was committing some sort of cardinal sin of an asking price higher than they liked (which never sold because I couldn't get enough crowd funding, and for the record was cheaper than you could buy yourself).

I enjoy the forum and learn a lot, but a lot of it is far from being as friendly as other forums I frequent that have people that buy very expensive cars and stereo parts. You just have to do as T. Swift.
