Yes indeed.

It always amazes me how seemingly intelligent individuals (you know, journalists that have apparently been to university etc) can put out such absolute drivel.

The world is falling apart from some calamity every other week, and they have as their front page headline 'Madonna wears blue nickers to porno party' or 'Prince Andrew caught fondling Frog' or some such thing. But, people read this crap and then they wonder why events take them over.

Why would it seem amazing that journalists do what they need to do to keep themselves employed? People buy newspapers about Madonna and Prince Andrew so they can enjoy complaining about what drivel it is and how stupid everyone else is except for them. Actually, some skip the newspapers and just like to complain about drivel and stupidity anyway. It's all part of human nature. Everyone looks for evidence they are smarter and more rational than others, while always looking at themselves in the best possible light. Only clinically depressed people see it the other way around, because they focus on the opposite bits of evidence.

Still, it's a shame that people don't want to study audio design, because they might learn something useful that might even help their own system.
I don't expect anyone here in particular to buy hi end components, they are too expensive, even for me, just like I would like a Boxter, but it would not be worth the investment these days for me. But the DESIGN of the Boxter could be very interesting to me. It is the same with my designs, I can't afford the more upscale ones, myself, and if I have anything special, it is because I bought it used, it was given to me by a grateful customer, or something I designed myself. So it isn't the cost of things that impress me, but the ENGINEERING that goes into many hi end designs. It is the engineering that I would like to discuss, not the cost or the shape of the cabinet.

John maybe you need to teach hi end audio design.
Why don't you write a course on it.

Oh come on anyone with internet and browser can get this.
The first question is Robin form BRUNO.

yeh but the questions are really hard to answer. Harder than the usual IQ tests. Forget the answers, I want to know who thought up these questions.

Was just kidding... if there were people here who could answer most all of them correctly without cheating, it would be a very small discussion group.

Might have to be in another place than Lounge, also. So as to not loose focus.

Question: Is quality in the eye of the beholder? Or, is there some real substance to it's meaning?

Perfection and quality seem to be high on the minds of Ultra high-end audio.

Sure they are - but many in the world of High End describe perfection and quality differently. Do they even have a strict definition?

we can start with -- what's your definition of quality?

If one figures out what the highest quality means and the highest performance means... you have what the best in High-End Audio means or strives to attain.

Is audio "magic" a moral violation?
I have no term "moral" in my minds, more like "vomiting", but it is interesting "moral" to observe in some hi end claims.
Or simple honesty.
I can imagine, how some sports car improve some details, power, speed or sound, just putting some wooden parts to hold exhaust pipe(resonator is good place:)), or some power lines, for example.:)

Or silver mirror(aluminium, gold) against plastics, producing claims about more "detail", or better "focus"...

When my IQ tested at the age of 13, I had no idea that is what I was doing.
It was conducted by a Dr. of psychology my parents sent me to. It wasn't anything like the tests on on the net.

I'm wondering if it makes a difference if the subject is aware they are doing an IQ test.

Don't think so. I didn't know what the tests were that the school administered in Jr. High, but still did about the same later in life when I did know. Also, IQ tests are very hard to game in terms of finding some way to achieve an inaccurately high score. I guess someone could produce a lower score without too much trouble, either by not trying, or by intentionally giving wrong answers.

Quality can refer to many different things depending on context. Quality artwork? Quality music? I don't know how objectively some things can be determined.

Maybe Quality in terms of reliability? Or some measured performance specifications for a product of some kind?

Demming seemed to think of it in rather different terms, maybe improved processes leading to less waste and improved outcomes?

Pick one?

Audio quality is not that hard to grasp. Does the reproduced signal transport you into another venue and with your eyes closed, could you really tell the difference?
How close to 'live reality' does your hi fi get you? Do you get excited with some music to the point of 'toe-tapping' or singing along? Can you do this when you are sober? Can you hear an 'electronic signature' that tells you it is not reality?
Do you get listening fatigue from something that should not be there in the reproduction? etc.

These bits have next to nothing to do with the quality of reproduction and everything to do with the quality of songwriting.

I tap my toes and sing along while sober every time I hear a song I like, be it on my stereo, ipod or a cheap transistor radio.

It's not true, at least not of everybody. Some of us are more discerning as to what moves us, even if we like the music. If you have never had this experience of being surprised with a sound system's quality and being pulled in to the listening experience, then you haven't experienced true high fidelity reproduction.
It is the same with autos, if you have only experienced inexpensive general production passenger cars, and have never driven in a sports car or very high level passenger car, you just don't know what you are missing. If you have tried the high performance stuff, but choose to ignore it, that's OK, but to deny the difference is disrespectful to other people's interests and aspirations.

See, that's your problem, you listen to music. If you would just stop staring at the ground and drooling, you could appreciate the finer points of high price tag.... errrr.... huckster physics.... err... high performance. The kind of performance that is so wonderful, you have to peek to appreciate it and it can't be measured. Just like cars and Pepsi!
