Didn't you format the partition? Or is it telling you this before you get the option to partition & format?

Not a snowball's chance in a hot place. You've got half the minimum space. Retail Winxp to Win7 and then Win7 updates, takes a minimum of 38GB, add at least two more GB for swap file. So, that's 40 (which is still insufficient to install anything). You've got 20.
Oh say, have I mentioned 120GB for drive C:? That would be enough space for windows and programs as well.
That sounds promising. Yes it should install OK, its just the license question and whether it will activate.
I feel sorry for the normal win 7 user. I did do a "normal" (pro W7) -
14.1GB with the swap , moved pagefile.sys to second partition , a little
under 10GB.
I would not use windows personally if it was not like (below).
RT Se7en Lite | Products is a legal way to slipstream the installation
to produce a VERY fast functional OS.
Pick what you need , verbose explanations of what you are leaving behind.
Have the installation just run the services you need , customize the GUI ,
and activate itself.
PS - before Firefox and other tools - W7/64 is 3.1GB. I reserve this
for "special" customers that really don't need help ... I add a full
W7 PDF to the install (W7 for dummies).
Actually , you would not need help ...
Restore with the USB , and the 4.7GB windows is back in all it's glory.

My Rebuild is now activated.
I lost count of how many times I installed Win7
at least 6times and got a new installation ID that failed the telephone auto system but passed the assistant check at first attempt. Call duration 13minutes 45seconds.
Compared to 4 calls lasting over 2hours on Wednesday.

I am ready to install the drivers from the Motherboard disc.
Do I install them in the 20GB OS partition, or
do I create a new partition and install the drivers separately from the OS?

I don't think you can specify where you want the drivers to reside in. Windows decides that.
The questions you should be asking is:
Should you image Windows now? After installing drivers? After installing SP1? I'll stop now and let Mooly take over.

I've just done all mine on the SSD rebuild and its not easy to get the sizes exact such that they show correctly in both disk management and the ordinary file explorer. You will have to 'guess' and then incrementally increase or shrink. Its only two minutes of a job.
Also... when you have installed drivers you need to update your WEI (Windows Experience Index) to get the best results and options available.
Just going to eat... back later.

What I would do is sit down and draw out what partitions you want. Take your drive size and knock say 5 or 10Gb from the total for safety and then decide what you want.
For example, I've set mine to 70Gb for Windows, 30Gb for 'Data'. That's to use for anything. 100Gb for Acronis backups and 30Gb for my own recovery files.
When you have set up the drive, make a recovery image before doing anything else.

Your C partition holds Windows and so that now needs to be... well up to you... but I would suggest a minimum of 60Gb. Given the size of your disc why not go for a round 100Gb.
Your other partitions should all be empty.
I would delete those partitions so that you have unallocated space and then expand the C partition to 100Gb. Having done that, then create the additional ones in order as you see fit. I'd suggest a 'data' partition which is free and yours to do as you wish with. Say 100Gb for that. 200Gb for backups and say 50Gb for a recovery files.
So that would be C, D, then I would choose Y and Z as letters for the last two. That leaves you some unallocated space... you might want another partition in future.

Sounds like you have your partitions sorted. That's good. In fact I use a 40Gb partition for Vista on the laptop I'm on now.
I'm afraid I can't help with the driver problem as its going to be unique to your set up.
What driver is it ?
You might find Windows picks up the drivers needed anyway. You could perhaps use task manager to identify the process and stop it so that you can get out of the loop.
And try typing Y. You never know.
