woofer assested full range design wanted

I've been intrigued by the full range speakers with low frequency assisting woofers.

I've just acquired a 50wpc transistor amp:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

It seems to me, the above amp could power the woofers and the full rangers could be powered by the EL34 SET (8wpc):

Are there any designs using drivers available in Australia?

What's the best way to split the input signal to the appropriate amp? I've got 2 DACs.

I use Daphile to play my FLACs.

Thanks as usual, Mack

Get a miniDSP 2x4 and the Advanced 2 way plugin. Perfect for FAST in a hurry. Infinite XO points and slopes at your fingertips.

Nice amp's by the way.

For FAST - you can try any full range driver that you like on top. It should preferably be smooth and not have lots of breakup or resonance peaks. There are bunch tested in a FAST in the Subjective Blind Comparison thread. Since you are using a tube amp on top, you need higher sensitivity. I would go with a Faital Pro 3FE32 16ohm. For woofer, anything 8in and bigger can work. Use a 15in if you have room. Put them in sealed and apply Linkwitz transform for deeper bass. Or use in OB, bass reflex, MLTL, TH, anything you like. The miniDSP lets you add delay between bass and top so time alignment is not an issue.

There are some very sensitive Fostex and Tang Band out there but I find they all have too much peakiness and coloration. Even the Dayton PS220-8 is colored but 95dB.

Use tops in sealed box or short sealed TL like Nautaloss or Dagger vented short TL.

If you can get PRV in Australia, I can recommend the 5MR450NDY. 95dB and sounds very nice. XO above 200Hz.

The EQ in miniDSP can tame a lot of that so if it's a few peaks not an issue.

Good luck.

Thanks, Would I need to adjust time delay with a side mounted woofer? There was at least one design on here but I haven't been able to find it.

You probably want to look at the miniDSP that takes digital, outputs digital.

The miniDSP is versatile, a PLLXO -- if you design the speaker to take advantage of it -- is dead simple and dirt cheap.

You want to have a look at FF85/105wk, and the Alpair 6p.

You can see some examples here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/144099-thread-tysen-variations-fast.html and http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/planet-10-hifi/260714-alpair-7p-alpair-12pw-combination.html and http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/269393-p10-hifi-alpair-7-3en-sdx7en-fast.html.

Looks like 2 Alpair 12PWs will set me back AU$340. plus shipping.

Are there less expensive substitutes that are anything close to the quality of the MAs?

Yes. If you are going FAST route and looking for a larger high sensitivity full range, look at PRV 5MR450NDY - $105 ea and 95dB sensitive. Also look at the Dayton PA130-8. Don't blow it off just because it costs only $18. Look at the T/S params and the smoothness of the response in the mid range. It is about 89dB sensitive and many think sounds very nice. Smaller 3.5in drivers also can work very well with a woofer in FAST. Look at Scan Speak 10F/8424 $100. SS 10F/8414 at $61 is also a great choice. The MA's can provide deeper bass extension when used on their own as a full range. But if going with a FAST, many other choices that have a smoother frequency response and good detail are available. Of course, if you are Ok with 84 to 85dB sensitivity the Vifa TC9FD or TG9FD are always excellent choices being some of the smoothest sounding high value drivers below the $60 price point.

The A12pw is only extended range…. meant to be used with a mid-tweeter. With woofers, you want to look at the smaller drivers like A7.3, if relieved of bass they are better. Or A10p if you want the efficiency.

I'm happy paying AU$180. for a pair of Alpair 7p but think going cheap on woofers would have less of an sonic effect.

Finding a design for locally available woofers will be the challenge.

Well, if you have specs, it's easy to design an enclosure with a simulating program. Take a peek at the Leonard Audios "Transmission Line" -program. Very simple to use and you'll get a functional enclosure out of it in no time.

Thanks Mayuri. I envisioned a sealed box for the Alpair 7 and a ported box for the woofer. I thought transmission Lines were for getting bass from full rangers.

I should probably just stick to bought plans.

Strangely enough my interest in transmission lines begin when I read about them in an old audio book from the 1930s I found in my local library. They were some big concrete labyrinth monsters. It's been some time, but I'm pretty certain they used 30's type full range radio speakers. Unfortunately, that book was 'culled' at some point by the short sighted librarians to make room for more computer monitors or something.

You should build what Mayuri just made. It's a double TL with a short one for the fullrange and a bigger longer one for the bass driver in a FAST. I modeled the system and looks pretty good.

tilroh,

Alpair 7.3 mid-tweet assisted by decent woofers in an active bi-amped system should sound better... we shall see (or rather read and learn) from your experience.

I did brief experiment long time back with Alp 7.3 in Mar-Ken boxes paired with TB 6.5" subs and crossed ~160 Hz IIRC (active, bi-amped) - and it did sound good. :)
