Marra's adventures in Decca land has yet to happen.

I have confirmed that my MM simplistic works though using a pair of Sowter SUT's and my Denon. Sounds really good to my old ears. I really do like this phonostage:D
I wonder if 220R loading is good for most Denon's as that is what I've settled on for the DLS1.

I want to hear more about Marra's adventures in Decca land! How is it sounding? I have a fondness for Deccas ever since I heard one properly set up, in a shop I worked in a long time ago.

For my own adventures in Denon land, I have been listening with 220R load resistors (I think I mistakenly said 200 ohms in a previous post). The top end sounds a bit smoother, and everything has a more "solid" or "together" sound, if that makes sense. Or maybe I'm fooling myself. Either way, the changes are subtle. I was hoping it would change the bass more, but I think a slightly "light" or "lean" bass presentation is just how this cartridge sounds. Not bad, and the low notes are there, just not as fat in the bass as my AT MM. Possibly more accurate.

Oh, it seems like the cartridge output might be a bit higher into the lighter load, I feel like I'm not turning the volume knobby up quite as far. Which leads to the next change; I will listen for another week or two, then replace the gain-setting resistors to lower the gain a bit.

Will we see more new builds soon?

Actually, I am about to do a Salas based on 11.02.FO version. 37db to use w/my Ortofon 2M bronze (5mv).

Since no pcb is available now, I plan on using 7cm x 9cm protoboard. Although I've built stuff before (F5, Ba-3, boozehound phono, etc.) this would be a pretty complicated layout on protoboard for me.

How does the attached visual look? Anybody have any advice or tips?

What's the timeframe look like? how long until delivery?

I am impatient. Might still go point to point.

It looks generally alright for a p2p configuration. I would vote for 3 weeks sign up time for about 5 weeks round time since this GB is belated already if Mike can manage.

Thanks Salas. And thanks for the design and always answering questions.

I think I will do it point to point...i like the challenge and I find doing the point to point stuff more rewarding and better for learning about circuits, etc.

Is there a big difference in this version and the current version the Pcb is being manufactured for? I see different jfet on input but I assume this is for MC. If we are talking about the low gain version for MM will I notice any sonic differences?

The sonic differences will be smaller for high output cartridges between the telescopic and folded cascode versions since the SNR is naturally stronger, but the FSP is still the better choice. Especially on its pcb that proved a success for absence of noises and good resolution. Not forgetting the positive contribution of its smack on integrated regs. The weaker resolving power of budget MM vs. expensive MC or MM will set a limit anyway. There is MM configuration in the FSP guide. If 2SK369BL are difficult for you, there is a 2SK170BL variation that I have suggested to member Roberto not too long ago and he had made on own boards. Here is it again. Should be kinda middle of the road compromise. It was for circa 8mA IDSS JFETs.

Thanks Salas. I didn't know, but now I do.

I might still do the telescopic version. I don't see myself going to MC soon (I really like the 2M bronze and will probably upgrade to the black when the time comes), and, while I have a good supply of 2sk170, the 2sk117GR is going to be a problem. Can we use a 2sk170BL (8ma-ish) in it's place?

Use the smallest IDSS 170BL you got in place of the K117GR or better use BF245A if you got any. See to have about 10V between R15 and D4 (across Q7) and adjust the R15 value for that. (Or R12, D1, Q5, in your #12842).

P.S. Match your FETS to a fair degree, and use your best matches in the second stage.

Very cool, I look forward to photos!

Thanks Salas. I've got 6 sets of 2sk170 between 8-8.5ma. Hopefully one of those will work in place of 2sk117GR. I'll adjust R15 to get around 10V between R15 and the LED.

I'll post a new protoboard layout soon for the folded w/2sk170 (Roberto's 40db version) soon. I appreciate the help.

Too bad, I look forward to hearing about it. The Decca is a remarkable cart, and the FSP is. Remarkable phono stage.

Me too :D Tonight I got home from work and my wife and daughter were out at a lake for a swim, so I had some time to listen to some records I like at a level I like :). I have been talking here about changes I have made and the incremental results, because I enjoy that process, but I have to say that the sound from this phono stage is remarkable. Of course, I have not listened to this cartridge through another phono stage, but I am loving what I am hearing.

Let's see... I think I started with some John Hartford, "All In The Name of Love" and "Nobody Knows What You Do". These are well-recorded acoustic albums, and good pressings, from 1975-1977, on the Flying Fish and Stony Plain labels. After that some Jimmy Cliff "Give Thanx", great percussion. Then I hit a little Buddy Rich "Live At The Tropicana", recorded in 1970. Awesome big-band arrangements, well recorded, pressed on the Liberty label, good vinyl. I think I got that record in about 1971 when I was learning to play drums. Then Dave Brubeck and Jerry Mulligan "Blues Roots". That led me to Brubeck's "Time Out", where Joe Morello's cymbals positively shimmered, and Eugene Wright's bass had real weight. After that I finished with Moe Koffman's "Jungle Man".

I just looked and the Buddy Rich album is called "Keep the Customer Satisfied", which is also the first track (the Simon and Garfunkel song), but it was recorded at the Tropicana in Las Vegas (the old Las Vegas when the mob ran it). Imagine the scene: The band has already played their usual three sets, and the punters have left. The word has gone out, up and down the Strip, that Buddy Rich is recording an album. The Vegas insiders, musicians, singers, dancers, performers of all kinds show up. Now it's 3 in the morning, the band have changed out of their tuxedos, the recording equipment is set up, and the band begins to play. :)
