alpair 12 studio monitor

That'd kinda depend on how large an enclosure you could accommodate - I've heard a single A12P in only two enclosures - the SuperPensil and a smallish standmount "miniOnken" - the larger enclosure wins in terms of low frequency extension and slam.

Be aware that the A10P is probably capable of the same extension in smaller enclosures, at the penalty of 2dB of sensitivity

Any particular reason for 2 12Ps?

IINM that would have been for the A12 metal - quite a different animal from the current 12P - I should think the design would be a poor match for the new driver

Is this actually for a studio monitor situation, and which driver do you have or will be acquiring?

If compact size is a factor, there's a small BR design for A10P that's reputedly quite OK - I haven't heard them yet.

The single driver 12P would be truly unsuitable as a studio monitor because of its erratic frequency response. From the graph shown here, from 130Hz to 17K Hz. From a 90 Db baseline, a -4 Db hole at 470 Hz, and a train of +8Db "ripples" on out to 17K. Forgive me here but you try to master anything with this ragged a response & ....who knows what you'll wind up with.
Monitors should be shooting for a -2+2 Db range ...not a -4 to an +8 Db, let alone a roller-coaster graphing.

I was recently at Sam Ash with my boys and we had a chance to hear and compare all the studio monitors they had on display. I don't recall all the brands but they had Dynaudio, Fostex, Krk, Yamaha, Jbl and some others. They all sounded totally different, barely similar and were all subject to personal taste. They all may measure flat but they certainly sounded different.

J2 sounds excellent on the MA drivers I have had. I would suggest a tweeter for the A12. Heresy, I know, but it is more about improved balance, top to bottom, and improved imaging. I am strongly considering the 10p for a mid in a monitor style setup with N26C tweeter and supporting woofer. MA drivers haev the most wonderful sound and are really only limited by physics. Anyone who speaks against them either has not listened to them or has not accepted these limitations. Most crossovers I have heard are much more easily identified than the variations in the frequency response seen above. Look at the 7.3 response. I can assure you the other than lacking in sub 50Hz bass, and slight loss of image up high due to beaming, it sounds spectacular.

Yes, a re-design would certainly be in order. The old metal A12 digs deeper in a smaller box than the 12p. Would have been interesting to hear the old DBR box thou. I'm thinkin' bass extension might have been quite good.

Maybe Scott will post a sim of the DBR.:)

THD+1, IMD, Waterfall, et. al. These and others will determine which is best...
No doubt trade-offs will be evident, one specification higher for another lower, that will be a matter of "personal taste".
Mastering in a studio is not the place for such silly notions as what "sounds better". Instrumentality is at our disposal, use it, learn it, know it.
Humanity has progressed by the usage of our collective minds, logic, the scientific process.........to apply emotions, feelings, all that is metaphysical when instrumentality is at our beck & call.........that is a step backwards.
Grab all those monitors, apply the scientific process & you will KNOW which is best.
The single driver monitor is by far the worst performer.

well, I don't think nirvana has answered the question as to whether the intended use is for real studio monitoring, or if was just the compact size that was appealing

and as Jeff notes, when a range of "official studio monitors" don't all sound the same, what does that say?

Why is a single driver monitor inherently the worst performer? Have you seen the measurements from the Nautaloss ref monitor? Well it does use a sub below 200 Hz but above that it is accurate and has very low distortion.

you have a proposal for small cabinets with 10p ?

I have a smallish rectangular & trapzoid Mar-Ken drawn, larger ones and CGRs yet to draw. We have both our pairs (one stock, 1 treated) in FH-XL (which works REALLY well). Scott's new CogiCastle could be sliced in half (and a vent adjustment) should support A10p pretty well.
