Dayton Audio's New 15" & 18" PA Drivers - B&C Copies?

The PRV's look like copies of the TBX - built on what looks like the same frame and motor. Inside, I bet the motor is a lot different. When I calculate out BL from the fs, Qes, vas, and sd I don't get the high values stated in the spec. I get numbers a little more normal. When I saw the 21, I thought that might be interesting. But then I started playing around with it in Hornresp, and found that Something Isn't Right Here.

The Dayton looks more like the RCF basket and motor. They actually model a little better than the TBWs as a good fit for a large horn stack. But what we all are dying to find out is what the power compression is like. If you lose 3dB of output you might as well double the price of the driver - putting the B&C back on top. An inside/outside wound coil seriously reduces the heat radiating area.

A PE rep talked about Dayton's power handling spec today this this thread - Dayton power handling #'s?

"RMS" or Root-Mean Square power ratings mean exactly what they say. This is the amount of power that the voice coil can withstand continuously from a sine wave signal, applied 24/7, without thermal failure. This number should be used when predicting performance and comparing products directly, since the RMS value is an industry standardized method of power rating. Note that AES power ratings are not the same as RMS - the AES standard uses a different analysis method to derive its power rating, which is usually 20-50% higher than the coil's RMS power. To stay out of trouble in the market, we use RMS, which is the older and more stringent standard, but some manufacturers of pro audio drivers use the AES power rating method to advertise a higher number.

"Max" power is the amount of power required to provide 3dB of additional headroom above the RMS power rating in order to prevent the amplifier from clipping under normal use. Doubling the power input to a loudspeaker driver does not double the number of dB - it only adds 3 dB of output. This is often referred to as "Program Power," because it predicts the power handling margin with a more realistic musical signal. Because this amount of power exceeds the RMS rating value, it can only be sustained for a brief period of time without overheating the voice coil. Put simply, the Max value is is the maximum recommended size of amplifier to use with the driver.

Hmm, perhaps someone should ask them why the B&C 18tbw100 is rated for 1500 watts RMS then, when its clearly stated on the BC website that its 1500 watts AES. (6 db crest factor pink noise)
Parts Express make the same mistake (substituting RMS for AES) for Eminence drivers too.

Dayton is among the few manufacturers currently using a sine wave RMS figure rather than an AES figure.

^clearly some confusion there. I noticed that as well first glancing at the specs.

Guess we won't find out until someone picks up the driver (cough josh cough) :p

If there's confusion I can probably get Rory to comment here... maybe. He's actually the product manager for Dayton, so I guess that means he's directly responsible for new driver design. Let me know if you want me to alert him about this conversation.

lol. perhaps we should all pitch in and send one to him for christmas. the daytons are mad cheap on my end....

Must be nice. I don't have any money.

This is a bit OT but does anyone have specs (or any into at all) for the 4 ohm version of the 18tbw100? A few places have it for sale but they list the same specs as the 8 ohm version. I can't even find any mention of the 4 ohm version on B&C's website.

I'd prefer a 4 ohm driver and of the 4 drivers listed here the tbw is the only one available in 4 ohm. Trying to find an affordable amp that can do 2500 watts might be tricky but a Behringer EP4000 can do it into 4 ohms and it seems to be getting cheaper every year. (And I already have one so the precedent is set.)

I would really appreciate it if you would contact him and see if he can share any info or details about these products. I am really interested in the 15" version and was about to buy something else, but these are looking like a better deal for the money.

Also BP1Fanatic, if you drop my Parts Express and gain any info about these products, please share it with the rest of us.

I will contact him tonight and alert him about this thread, but before I do that, do you have any specific questions?

(By contact, I mean I'm going to send him a PM on the PE forum, I don't have any special relationship with him.)

not shure, but i think i found it when weltersys introduced this driver to the forum.
Here it is again, there are some minor differences to the specs you posted.

I sent him a PM 4 days ago inviting him to join this thread or to answer the questions via PM and I could copy and paste his answers here.

I received no response at all.

You can try asking questions in the PE forum or try contacting PE directly but I think the only guy that could answer questions on a new product that's not even in stock yet is the product manager, the guy I already tried to contact.

Hey, thank for trying. I may try contacting him myself, and if I get any interesting answers, I will share them here.

I just got the PE 2014 catalog this week, and the catalog lists the 15" and 18" both having an xmax of 11, whereas the webpage specs only state xmax is 10.
