Sound Quality Vs. Measurements

Litigation? Who did they sue, Brad?

If memory serves, the same Dr Amar G. Bose was a professor at MIT. To me, this spells a certain proficiency in physics, which was his subject, but I could be wrong.

Some might know I designed the Garrard 501` turntable . One day Ken Kesler I think said had we considered changing the make and model to lets say 888 ? He seemed genuinely concerned about Bose being difficult about it . My old boss Terry O'Sullivan went very quiet . He then marched up to the Bose stand and asked them about it . They said when did Garrard make the 301 ? 1954 and the 201 was pre 1939 . They then said they better look out we didn't sue them . Then with a smile I think the Bose guy said it's Levi's you need to worry about . I am told Peugeot registered all the numbers they could think of and would be defending them .

Ken K told us they are a bit hot on it .

Yet, he succeeded to design and build products that were very well packaged in a marketing sense and got people believe they were hearing very good sound reproduction, and managed to sell a ton of them.
Well, he certainly knew how to create terrible PA speakers - every time I go somewhere and they're using those cursed devices I know my ears are going to have a bad night ...

A very smart and intelligent man in my book.

No doubt, Jan.

Much like Bill Gates - Bill was just a wheeler dealer, he bought even the DOS operating system. Microsoft is a marketing company which programs only when it absolutely must.

Just like Bose - he's an Oriental merchant who does physics only when he absolutely must (aside from defying gravity when he walks to the bank).

I am told by a friend who knew both that Bob Carver and Amar Bose were the only two audio figures the late Saul Marantz refused to meet in person. Poetic justice? What goes 'round comes 'round?

The sad fact is the Bose concept is good....
In my experience 'good' is a little strong. 'Different'' might be better. With minimal care in placement 901s could sound huge without the physical presence but I never heard them sound tolerable. Opinions I respect have spoken well of their performance in very live spaces, think two-story glass back walls.

Bose, and certainly the 901 forward firing, are hugely overunderestimated by too many on this site. I don't know of any other speaker that is still being sold in good numbers over three decades after its introduction. There are good reasons for that. Bose understands psyco-acoustics better than most manufacturers. This does not produce audiophile gear, but rather stuff that people like to listen to. It's pretty effective engineering, just done for a different segment of the market.

Well, the Moskvich has been made for over 30 years and sold in vast numbers, but that doesn't make it a good car, just a gas guzzler.

I don't know what's it like in North America, but locally, nobody owns Bose speakers. Best indicator - when they come up on a local ebay-type site, they stay there for a long, long time. And locally, we are very partial to American speakers. An ancient JBL 4311 will be snapped up in a jiffy, and at none too gentle prices.

True. In a sense, neither did Bose. While they still exist and work, today they are not what they used to be.

In the late 70ies, the US speaker industry had three distinct approach to sound shall we say trends - AR, JBL and Bose. As we all know, AR is gone, JBL is still going strong as a part of Harman International, and Bose is still here, but is no longer what it used to be, now it's just one of many.

Many perhaps, but which part of their business are the 3, 5 and 9 series, as opposed to "lifestyle" systems, automotive audio, PC audio, etc?

The real question would be to compare their total sales in any specific category with their sales from way back then, and to see what percentage of sales in that category they used to be, and what is it today.

Not that I'm particularly interested.

Dvv . I have been in a Moskvich , interesting . It had what we call a 50 /90 speedo . That is the speed is the average of the reading as it oscillates . Watch Russian film Solaris . They were almost up with the west in it's period when driving in Moscow , the Lada was as good as it got . The more intriguing thing is how the Russians turned the Fiat 124 ( 125 ) one of the best cars I have ever known into the Lada . What we preach here is go the other way . Lada had a 4 wheel drive of considerable reputation . Lancia had cars that rusted away . The Lancia engine in the 4 x 4 Lada was a favoutite .

Lancia Integrali is a wonderful car . It is also a shopping car . It is even well made . If you follow I am saying how wonderful and awful can be about details .

Is the Bose 901 Lada or Integrali ? It is the 4 x 4 Lada I guess but sold as ..........

Well, Sidney Harman refused to meet with me for an interview. Serves him right ;)

I heard a full Bose setup in 78, power amp and 901 with eq, i thought it was fantastic how it filled the room with sound. People who listen to live PA bands will favor the sound ..
