The Boominator - another stab at the ultimate party machine

Hello again.......

I'm struggling a little here, no routing expericence except for what I have done so far on my boominator....... I want to route two 220x400x4mm panels in the boominator top to rebate my solar panels........

I'm not sure how to do this with a hand router......

I'm thinking of using a 12mm router bit to outline the shape first.....
Then I should "hollow" out the inside of the shape on a router table, ensuring that the boominator top stays perfectly flat.........

Does that sound about right or would there be a better way of doing it?

BJ

I just did that this evening, I hope this pic helps.
I used a 1/2" cutter with a 16mm collet running inside an appropriately sized template.
The template is just wide enough so the router base spans it, about 80mm on my router.
Route a slot then slide the template along and route another until all done.

Thanks a lot, that really helps, as long as it doesn't rain this weekend, I shall have a go (I don't have a workshop or shed)....

What a great forum this is.......

amplifiers

Aabo, I have been experimenting hooking up different amplifiers to my boominator speakers tonight.... wow, what a difference an amplifier makes, they all sound totally different, a testament to the sensitivity and transparency of these speakers (it has also reminded me about how good my vintage valve amp is)...... save your judgement on sound until you get a decent amplifier, they are definitely not all created equal........

Shortrope... nice looking Boominator, thanks for the photos, glad you decided to go with the solar panels.... Are they the maplin ones? I picked mine up for £9.00 each, bargain.......

Yup, Maplin ones, thanks for the heads up.
Let me know if you need anymore help with the cabinetry, that's the one bit I fully understand!
By the way, that cheap Tripath Amp I got off ebay is working very well!

I bought one of these

CTEK XS 0.8 Car Battery Charger - the smartest battery chargers in the world!

It can be left plugged in and used as a power supply.
It has a nice little panel mount socket with a cap and a battery power indicator light.
Should do the job.

This is what I want to be able to do, however, how long does it take to charge 14aH with 0.8 amp charger, about 18 hrs?.... I thought that 2 - 4 amp charger would be better.....

Is 2 - 4 amp version of this charger too powerful and liable to damage my batteries, amp or solar panels

Seems to be grand to me.
I don't expect to be charging from empty and a top up charge can be done overnight.
The little panel connector that you can get with the C-tek is very neat.

Just putting the last pieces together I was wondering if there are any issues with adding a ac-dc adapter on the solar panel side of a solar charge controller. this way I will be able to just put a 15v current through a chassis socket when needed, and use the phocos as a smart charger. but will the panels take damage from the adapter current?

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

it's a phocos cis controller with 2x 10w panels

Last bit of info needed, pictures will be uploaded within the next couple of days!

Yup. You can do that. Check both your panels with a multimeter. They should show some resistance in one direction, and no connection in the other. If that, no problem. If not, then you need to connect (schottky) diodes to your panels first, so the power doesn't just run into them and all you have is a really expensive space heater.

I'm planing on painting my boominator matte black ( "Mattsvart" in swedish ) and im woundering if this is gonna be a problem since the colour absorbes heat? If it's playing in the summer sun for a whole day, doesnt it get extremly hot in the electronical department since the batteries are there aswell??

If the heat will become a problem, how do i solve it? Havent started the build yet.

We're not living in Death Valley or the Aussie outback. It'll not be a problem.

Boominator test

Woo, just had a great weekend, two boominator partys, field testing my unfinished boominator.......

BJ's Boominator

Lots of glowing compliments about the sound quality
Offers to buy from rich Londoners down for the day
Suggestions to "patent" the design... all sorts...
Don't worry, I've been proud to say that I belong to a global open access community and that the design is down to a very clever Dane known as Saturnus.....

Input vol a bit low, will be sorted with the AMP6, laptop batteries ran out well before the Boominator... Volt meter reading 13.2v in full sunlight, hasn't dropped below 12.5v after 15hrs of playing..... seems like everything is working OK...

Whitstable is looking forward to a new way of partying, thanks Saturnus....

I'm already thinking of the next ones.... A pared down, bullet proof basic one with no solar, no voltmeter (just charge socket), on/off switch and input. It will have a built in satellite tracker. I'll hire this one out for other peoples parties.......

The other personal one will definitely be 24v, AMP9, mini DSP... can't wait to stack them all up and run them as a line array....... lol

To elaborate on this. If you're planning to take your Boominator into areas where day time temperatures can and will exceed 40 C (104 F) then it's probably wise not to paint it black. But the speaker itself and the amps inside are convection cooled by drawing cold air through the venting holes from near the ground and expelling the hot air at the top.

If you're running at 24V and full throttle during day time then you might wanna install a (temperature controlled) 60mm fan in the two top venting holes just to make sure it doesn't overheat.

Thanks for the praise, and thanks for sharing.

It shows exactly why I made it in the first. So people can have a good time. The boombox doesn't take center stage but just provides the musical experience to complement and amplify the mood. That's what a good sound system does in my opinion, simply melt into the background because the sound is clear, transparant and controlled.

Naturally ambient music, or any type of music that is heard rather than felt, is going to play to the Boominators strong points.

AMP6 arrived today, no paperwork with it so I don't know if the boominator mods have been included or not, I did message 41hz to say that the order was for a boominator..... My problem is that I don't know if the resistors and caps included are the right ones or not... also there are a couple of surface mounted components that I wasnt expecting... ah well, here goes......

As have been said many times before ... pictures really do help ;)

The surface mount components are, IIRC, quite easy to do.

My approach was to apply solder to one of the pads (this is for the power diodes underneath), sit the component on the pad, heat the pad so the solder melts, wait for that to solidify and then solder the other end down.

Don't tin both pads, or it'll never sit flat to the board.
