Beyma 12P80ND + TPL-150

I am confined to watching Youtube videos, unless Stig-Erik lives in the Oslo area and would invite me for a demonstration.

Here is a saxophone clip I like, but I am not sure how this captures the sound of the RD-75:
Wisdom audio M75 ribbon speaker ll - YouTube
According to the video, the driver seem play very clean and to have enough low mids. It also seem to "sizzle" like a true ribbon tweeter.

Here is a saxophone clip with a horn speaker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9CL_UMUOyA
Very different speakers! I would enjoy something in between.

Grec13: You are the first to not like the RD-75 here. I have no real opinion as I have yet to hear it. It seems likely that the RD-75 would lack dynamics compared to other speaker types, since the 1" wide 50cm Transmission Audio ribbon tweeter certainly does. The TPL is slightly low on dynamics compared to a 1" Beyma/JBL compression driver.
I wonder what Stig-Erik has to say about it, and if he has heard a good compression driver system before with a 1.4"-2" compressin driver, and how it compared to the RD-75 in terms of dynamics. Some of the downsides with compression driver mids that I can think of would be distortion, and horn honk, as ribbons usually sound cleaner.

I shall try to avoid Peerless subwoofers then. Peerless never occured to me for subwoofers anyway. Beyma and JBL are high on my list.

I think there are different ways of using the word "dynamic" here.... to put it mildly. RD-75 is the most dynamic driver I've ever heard, according to my definition of the word "dynamic", which is to not smear or over-emphasize the transients, and is very "fast" in stopping after the transients. Lack of coloration is a good indication of very good transient response and dynamics.

An 18" driver is around 1200 sq cm.

The RD-75 planar membrane is 180 cm long, and somewhere around 7 cm wide. That is approx the same area.

But the Xmax is significantly lower so the volume of air that the RD75 can move is much lower than an 18" woofer. Not that I'm saying it matters as much at the frequencies of its intended operating range, just that the analogy based on surface area is somewhat misleading.

You could have a tweeter with the same radiating surface as a football pitch and it wouldn't take a lot of movement to move a lot of air, but I'm not sure the advantages (low distortion etc) would outweigh the disadvantages (far from being a point source etc).

I put 12p80nd in place again. I removed high-pass filter. I think experimenting around with different try out's is coming to a end. I decided to sell the Line Magnetic 555 drivers. The 12p80nd/TPL sounds so right to me. And i can safely say, i will hardly find something that will be better for my taste. The ones that do not like the performance above 10khz : maibe change the amp is the cure.....
I have still a issue to find a better amp than i have now. Maibe the 300b will do it. Otherwise, i will try a Hiraga class a, 20w amp. If it has the same sound signature, as the Le Monstre, i will be done for a long time. :)

What about the Liberty-8, you tempted to try it Angelo?

It will be a mix between yours and Romys system basically, but with bigger sub. And possibly also Stig-Eriks. It is not finished yet. My system right now is scattered around the world, arriving to me by post and some in my GFs luggage. Sent her shopping JBLs and custom tube amps for me in Canada. :)

Custom Tube amps ? thats cool. Choosen already what configuration, tubes etc. they will be ? multi amping ?

Multi-amped yes. I am hoping the American made +12au7/EL84 custom built amp with temporary Chinese JAN 5670 preamp, will have enough punch for the JBL 12" midbass/Fane 8M horn. I am going to use a JA6681B with the sweet sounding 2A3/45 amp and a TPL on top. They are all around 103-110dB. Will save on tube amps by mixing passive and analog active XOs.

The other two channels are more difficult to implement as the 90~dB sensitive Transmission Audio driver and the heavy sub diver will not work well with tube amps. Mixing tube amps and SS amps is a no-no. While I think about it, the three first mentioned channels will do fine for now. If not Stig-Erik make me think otherwise with his RD-75. Then I sell everything and start from scratch. :p
