Suppose you were prepared....I could depend on a .44mag HP, for sure it will stop a bear.
IF you are good at hitting a really fast moving target - and most people aren't.....
You stay there and shoot - it will give me time to get away....
Doubtful you would be able to out run a bear if it is really after you. Climbing a tree won't help you either.IF you are good at hitting a really fast moving target - and most people aren't.....

Easy live in the UK. No Bears.
Well, you got Paddington Bear, and Winnie the Pooh -- don't they count?
btw, my nephew is a heli-rapeller forest fire guy, and was surprised by a bear in Montana 2 years ago -- if you see fresh poop you're in trouble.

I know all about those things. Bears can run at something like 25 to 30 mph. Buuuuuuuut with you standing there taking pot shots and me heading in the other direction - that puts you between the bear and me. If you are lucky enough to hit it - then no problem and we are both safe.... If ya ain't - well - it's been nice knowing ya......
I'm qualified with a number of those little bang-bang toys and I don't give a big hoot about what people see in the movies - hitting a fast moving target is not that easy..... Esp. if you have a load in your pants....

When a black bear grabbed 22-year-old Brooke Collins' dachshund on Wednesday,
the Alaska native didn't stop to think of the consequences.
She just punched the bear in the face.
The elderly dog suffered only minor injuries.
