"The Wire" Ultra-High Performance Headphone Amplifier - PCB's

Hey Do, whatcha been puffin'?

Keep repeating this is your mind... "I do not need these boards, they are not good for me... I need to sell them to Do... Yes I do..."

And keep on repeating this. I'm sure you will be glad to sell them and you're actually going to feel pretty good about it! :D

Your only friend :violin:

Don't worry about this GB... We'll buy the next best thing when OPC is done with it! ;)

Don't think that next headphone amp of "The wire" type from opc will hit the forum too soon. Original amp is not only very good on measurements (perfectly meets audiophille needs) but also is soundwise transparent (from what I read in forums). As a matter of fact todays best DACs can't output better performance to really exceed "The wire" boundaries in measurements aspects. Of course there is a room for improvements, but IMHO with such an amp better to improve the DAC. As "The wire" is so transparent to sound signature I understood that flaws that people hearing in sound may be due to DAC imperfection. With this amp I would rather think not for amp improvements but for DAC improvements.

Don't take it as a 'the ultimate truth', it is just my IMHO

P.S. Would be very cool to see new GB for this, but new "wire" version also would be fine :)

My bom calls for 820uf caps, is a lower value like 330uf or 470uf recommended?

Sounds like you are working off an out-of-date BOM. The very latest BOMs from opc are at the bottom of the Wire wiki. I can't get a link to the wiki to work for some reason, but at the top of this DIY Audio page you will see "wiki" as a choice in the blue bar. From there pick "diyAudio.com Wiki (list)". Then on that page pick " 'The Wire' Headphone Amp Build Wiki" thread by opc. The current BOMs are at the bottom of that page.

I don't see an 820uF in any of those. The latest schematic is there too. I just looked through that and don't see any 820uF.

Which board are you building (like SE->SE) and where did you get your BOM from?

EDIT: see the revised post below. You have one of the original Wire boards from the first group buy. :) Sources for the 820uF posted below.

It predates the time that I have been following The Wire threads, I don't know if there were any changes to the design between new and old pcbs or simply layout improvements. wendell c has one of the original boards though.

Yep, you are right, I just realized he is working with one of the original Wire boards from the first group buy. I went back to the early part of the thread (first BOM was in post 77) and sure enough, there is an 820uF. That was before my time, lol. :)

OK, Farnell has 3 of them and element14 has 38:

plg1c821mdo1 - Octopart

But that probably isn't going to help wendell c if he is in the US. I think this one will take opc, qusp, or someone else to spec an alternative part that would fit in that first Wire board and is in stock from Mouser or DigiKey. Here is the Digikey page for it and the data sheet

I just had a look at the schematic on the first page, if that's the one that he's got boards for I'd be pretty tempted to try the 330uF listed in the current BAL-SE bom (dk part: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=493-3718-ND), it is the same type and has the same lead spacing dimension.

The main changes that I noticed from a quick glance is that C12-C14 & C16-C18 changed from 4.7uF to 1.0uF and C15&C19 from 820uF to 330uF.

I'd like someone to confirm this though and if it isn't the case I'd also like someone to tell me why so we all aren't leaning on qusp and opc to spoon feed us!

Well I have listened to the amp, listened to all of Owen's little master pieces. We had a great diy audio meet over the weekend. And they are superb. Anybody waiting or waiting on time to build you have a great treat in store for you. This stuff is leaps and bounds better than almost anything you will find commercially at prices less than your favorite automobile.

Kudos to the man. Very, very good sound.

Hi Guys!

It was a busy weekend with the audio gathering here in Ottawa, so I've been offline for the past few days. As Mark mentioned, it was a really great get together with a pretty incredible collection of local talent, and some that drove in from as far away as Toronto and Montreal. All the headphone amps were on display, along with my loudspeaker project I've been working on, which was powered by the little LPUHP amps.

Wendell c:

It might be easiest to just compare with the current BOM for the new PSU. All the parts should be backwards compatible, and although it's unlikely to make much of a difference, the new parts were chosen because they are better suited for the role. If at all possible, use the parts listed on the PSU BOM for the new PSU. See the bottom of the Wiki page for all the details.

TiEx and Pinnocchio:

Don't fret too much guys, we'll get you hooked up one way or another. Once I finish the cleanup from this weekend, I'll be packing up everyone's orders (sans mosfets) and then I'll do an inventory check to see what's left.

There's a very good chance you'll be able to get what you're looking for, so just keep an eye on this thread starting from next weekend and I'll post what's left. For some things I will have full kits, for others it will be partial kits (missing a few parts) and for some things it will be boards only.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the help while I was away! Your tips were spot on, and hopefully wendell c took your advice!

Thanks for the positive feedback! It's always such a great experience sharing the gear with everyone and getting comments and impressions. I too very much enjoyed your horn loaded monters, and I wish I had taken more time to give them a better listen! I was a little off-centre during your presentation, but next time I'll be sure to get a middle seat!

Thanks again for the feedback, and for always helping to make it a great show for everyone!

Cheers,
Owen

Yessssssss! :D

Well my Bal-Bal is up and running.

• Those people with one of these, did you need to run it in for a while? How long? Did it change much during running in?

• I'm using ±8 volts because I'm taking the ± from the PC soundcards regulators. Has anyone here tried these boards or chips at different voltages and heard any difference in sound?

Thanks.

I have had two independent reports so far of the amplifier requiring a decent amount of break-in time, so there may be something to it.

I'm also raising an eyebrow at the thought of the amp dangling off the side of a sound card inside your PC. It might not be the best circumstances for evaluation!

As for voltage, things seem to be best between +/-12VDC and +/-15VDC, although the changes are pretty insignificant as long as you stay above 9V or so.

Owen
