Hypex Ncore

Hey, another one from Groningen; I live some 2 miles from Hypex (Helpman), but no ncore for me yet.
I live 2,5 miles from hypex (de Weijert). But I do not think that the modules will be here sooner, unless they start bringing them personally. :D

When you, Corpius, are looking for something "in between" (whatever that is...) maybe a hybrid is your taste
 I should have known not to start this conversation. It always leads to the point that none of the contributers has become any wiser.

Yes, we've received the boards and QC is working hard to check everything. We'll start with shipping tomorrow, and most likely monday the rest of the back orders.... ;)

I'm looking forward for more comments about the performance!
:cheers: I'd better start buying the the remaining needed parts.

Forgive my ignorance, but I am truly a novice at this. I did build very nice UCD400 monoblocks, but I did not use the balanced connectors since my DAC at the time was not fully balanced.

Since that time I now have a fully balanced DAC and will build the NCores with balanced connectors. My DAC obviously has female chassis XLR connectors, but do I use female or male XLR chassis connectors on my NCores. Sorry for the simplistice question, but I have never used balanced before.

? Output from Dac is male connector normally and inputs (to amp here) are female then. Which Dac do you have ?

By convention, xlr inputs are female and xlr outputs are male. But you can always choose to do it different and build your own balanced interconnect.

PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC MK II. Has male XLR outputs. Sorry, my brain and my fingers were disconnected when typing. Not paying attention.

If I read Corplus' response correctly, using conventional XLR cables, the NCores should have female inputs? I guess inputs WOULD be female, at least that's what I'm used to at home, so why not in audio! Makes sense, huh? :D

Linkwitz Orion and Ncore

Hi there, I also live 4,7 km from Hypex, Noorderplantsoen Groningen:p.

I'm currently building a pair of Linkwitz Orions v3.5 using the new Seas woofers. For this system I'm eagerly saving money to buy a good 6- or 8-channel amp. I'm hoping the NCore amps will be within reach of my budget. However with 400 watts I'm also concerned to burn my expensive tweeters in case of a power dropout or something else causing serious interference.

Therefore I have 2 questions:
1) is it possible to reduce the NCore's power in order to reduce the chance of damaging the tweeters?
2) how much smps's are needed to power the Orion loudspeakers? One loudspeaker has 2 woofers (10 inch), 1 mid (8 inch), 2 tweeters? Is one SMPS per loudspeaker enough?

Hi Tymen,

I still win with 3 km :D

For the woofers UCD's in stead of ncore's will be more than sufficient (following Bruno's advice...) and will save you quite some money.
Actually a UCD180 will do, as you don't need more power even for the Orion equalized bass (open baffle bass takes less amplifier power than you think; I remember that Linkwitz mentioned 60 watts to be enough).
Extra quality of ncore amps should be apparent in mid and high. The datasheet tells you how low the power supply voltage can be.
I estimate that with a low supply you will still have a 100 watt at 4 ohm amp (tweeters parallelled).
I am about to start building open baffles too, but my approach is a bit different (high efficiency speakers with low power class A amplifiers).

Lowering the amp power is not a good idea, and only in the extreme rarest failure mode would protect your tweeters. More often the *lower* power would damage them via clipping. Anyway woofers are at the most risk in amp or power failures, and Hypex has good protection circuits. However, the ncores are DC-coupled (yes?) unlike the stock UcD, so require more care in the protection area; not sure whether they have additional protection circuitry for that reason.

EDIT: I think your best protection actions would be strong surge protection for all the electronics, but especially for the active crossover.

Tymen has a pair of 10"s on each side, if he plans to use them at high levels sometime, he should have more than 100w for each bank. Also, I don't know the impedance of that part of that speaker, if it dips below 4 ohms anyplace he should consider the ncore instead because of its 2 ohm near-perfect voltage-source performance, IMO. He'd probably be fine with UcD but might get better sound with ncore even in the low band. Another consideration is that the amps should last many years, why underpower a future speaker like an ATC, etc?

EDIT#2: From the Linkwitz website"

"...If the two 10" drivers of the woofer are connected in parallel, then they present a low 2 ohm impedance to the power amplifier around 100 Hz. The power amplifier driving this load must be capable of at least 200 W into 4 ohm. I prefer separate, lower power amplifiers for each 10" driver..."

You can thank me later... 8P

Cheers

Hi Sam Lord,

Two remarks:
- a lower power Ncore will put out some 100 watts at 4 ohm when I check the datasheet well; do you think that this power will drive a pair of tweeters (crossed over at some 1500 Hz) into clipping before you already killed your woofers and mids when trying?
- UCD180 delivers the more than 100w at 4 ohms easily. When you would have followed the thread you might have remembered Bruno Putzey's opinion: ncore does not better UCD in the bass department. "Underpowering" multi-amped speakers systems with hundreds of watts of class d power for future speakers? You'll be deaf by that time...
