any others? (i know..there are alot more others..so bring them on)

I have posted this before, but you asked for it.....

I built this as an experiment. It existed for about a week or so before I tore it down since it took up the whole work bench, used all the available line (mains) power (blowing the breaker twice) and could cause death, fire or explosion at any moment.

It put out about 200 watts using an 833A running on 1500 volts idling at 275 mA.

Philips TB 3/1000 amplifier

Good afternoon DIYaudio-forum,

also already posted in a thread on this forum ( http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes-valves/111971-tb3-1000-alive-european-833a.html ) is my amplifier.
It started as a 833A-amplifier (2 monoblocks with dedicated external powersupplies) but when i scored a stash of Philips TB 3/1000's i quickly changed to that triode instead.

Currently they run at 110 VDC / 240 mA. But what are numbers; it is the sound that is important !

Looking forward to see this interesting list grow....

Regards,
Reinout

Are those 6lQ6 tubes in the output ...?

The tubes in that picture are 35LR6's because I got 45 of them NIB at the Dayton hamfest for $4 each. 6LQ6 are far out of my price range for experiments like this.

Petes board seems to work well with any horizontal sweep tube that fits the socket, and even some that don't, with some creative rewiring. I have run dozens of tubes through the board but the 6LQ6 / 6JE6C isn't one of them due to the cost and relative scarcity.

I settled on a 6HJ5 build that made 125 WPC and posted it back into the original thread. Several builders have duplicated it with good results.

There will be some more big watt experiments in the future since I have a pair of 400 watt OPT's that need use.

I just finished this one (18.5 kg before potting) for an 851....
The tube next to the transformer is an 845, to give an idea of dimension.
I am happy that the customer listens in mono :(

Left in the picture is a 211; at the right an 851.

aaarrgghhh, i noted a horrible mistake in my message

Anyone qualified to play with the power levels talked about here understood since 110 volts and 240 mA can't even warm up a 6L6GC! Big tubes like big volts. Big power requires a few big tubes or a lot of small ones.

My biggest design were only 125Wrms per channel so nowhere close to qualifying..

125 WPC is where I feel safe with the red board. I am not planning to post the details for anything bigger since there are some traces close enough to each other that might emit smoke at higher power.

My biggest amp was created back in about 1972 and was completely sand powered (24 X 2N3773). About 1200 watts, depending on how many speakers you plugged into it, and mono. It was used for a PA by a rock band that played outdoors a lot and was still kicking in the mid 80's when I recapped it.

Would be nice to see some PA tube amps. Wonder if there even is a market for giants tube amps. I think it's hard to beat a tube a high power levels. SS ussualy has some nasty trick to handle the power level that PA amp has to have. But having more that 1000W would be veeeeeeeeery expensive. So there is not so much market left.....

These days you can get big power solid state PA amps for fairly cheap. A quick look at the web site for a US based musical equipment company shows a 2 KILOWATT PA amp (Behringer EP2000) for $259 USD. A 1 KW Crown is $299 and 2 KW is $499. A Peavey 3KW is $449.

I think you could easilly spend that much money on the OPT's alone in a tube amp of that magnitude.

Web site is:

Music Instruments and Professional Audio Equipment | 800-449-9128 | Musician's Friend

I have no interest other than buying a few toys from them. I got a new sound card today while stuff is on sale.

I think I've seen that picture before but never noticed that subtle stylish flair in the application of the ViceGrips. :D
