Hi John,
thanks for you and your wife providing a wonderful afternoon DIY meet in your home.

Your system amplifiers and horns were very good, as were the other speakers brought up for audition. All of them were sounding very good and were very nicely finished, better sounding than most commercial offerings, of course it is (DIY)

Hopefully we can continue this venture in the future?

Well, those covered most of the pictures I wanted to post, so I'll look for something else...

The build quality was pretty high. John's preamp and Hybrid amplifier looked good and sounded good. Those huge speakers came to be by John's hand BTW. Andrew also showed a pair of really nicely finished speakers. Everything was done well to be honest. All the equipment we heard was certainly listenable, nothing bad going on.

You can see the gang of us there, then it looks like Phil (left) was demanding another hamburger or something from John (right). I can't remember what they were talking about, but it was much more friendly than the picture would suggest!

We have to do this again!

-Chris

Looks like it was better even than I thought it would be ... double damn! Oh well, my dad got to play with my new baby instead so ... I'll just have to catch the next one.

Would you guys be able to provide names for that great group shot so the ones that missed can put some names to faces?

Cheers,
Jeff

I'll take a stab at it.

Left to right:

Anatech, Lo Tse, A nice man that isn't on the forum(phil's brother in law I think), jscelo, raypalmer, Jeremy (can't remember which screen name that is jpechloe or top shelf?), Phil... never caught his screenname I don't think, but I talked with him a good deal, vanderkruk in the suspenders, mill23bay next I believe and then deitrich on the seat.

Now please remember I still can't name all of my wife's family yet so I may not be the best man for remembering names...

jscelo you're a gentleman and a scholar and there ain't many of us left. You have a charming wife to boot and you were kind enough to have us all round.

I'm sorry to everyone that I had to drag Chris away too early, I'll have to make that up.

It was great meeting everyone, hopefully some more faces next time. (soon!)

I really got a kick out of John and Andrew's speakers, the power and efficiency was amazing! I plugged mine into the same amp that had been driving the corner horns and at full power they were only just singing! I must redouble my efforts...

PS: Andrew, how much were those ribbons on your corner horns? Can you recommend an inexpensive pair?

Hi Mr. raypalmer,
You were pressed into service as my ride home, then got news you had to go. No sweat and don't worry about having to run. Sometimes life just happens. I would like to thank you for dropping me off, which was well out of your way. You are a gentleman.

All,
The get-together was unexpectedly short, but we all had fun. John is good on the grille, so there are other employment opportunities for him! He made sure everyone one happy and fed, as did his wife, Debra. (I had to ask her name as well). I think she should come along for future meetings if she's interested. Debra seemed to enjoy herself as much as anyone else did.

From talking to a few people, I see there is high interest in meeting again soon. John's suggestion for a more formal meeting with a schedule to ensure that we are able to hit the various activities is a good one. That means I'll have to actually talk, doesn't it? No problem, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone again, and perhaps some more people who couldn't make it that time. Most of us have knowledge to share with the rest of us, so more of you might be asked to talk about what you know. John, for example, has a lot of knowledge about switching power supplies. I want to learn something from him on that subject. I'm going to bet he has experience in other areas as well. We all know things that others don't.

Now a question for everyone interested. Who were not able to attend that might come next time. Could be a different location. I'm just wondering how much interest there is locally. Keep in mind that there is no expectation for attending every single meeting. Come as can.

Names to Pic

raypalmer got the names right. I am the Phil - I haven't posted here before so you wouldn't recognize my screen name. John, 3rd from left is indeed my brother-in-law. Jeremy is Top Shelf. Too bad Debra couldn't be in the photo - someone had to take the picture ;-)

Andrew used 2 different ribbon tweeters. One was the Aurum Cantus (exact model not sure - Andrew will know) and the other was the B G Neo3 I believe.

Thanks to everyone for a great event, to raypalmer for initiating the idea, and to jscelo for grabbing the ball and hosting the first one. I look forward to the next meeting, to the presentations and the audition of more projects

Anatech,

Yeah, the meet was a bit short, but sweet though. John's idea of having a meet with technical presentations sounds fine. However, we probably have to start earlier like mid-morning and prepare to spend a whole day to cover all the intended activities e.g. listening to gears, exchange ideas and discuss techniques etc.

Location is always an issue. Although John might not mind but we cannot impose on him all the time (his place is great!). I like the idea that RayPalmer suggested last time - to rent a hall or some sort. But the renting cost has to be low in order to make it affordable even for a relatively small crowd (say 10 -15 people). Anyway, let's think about it and I am sure we can come up with something.

Oh, by the way Chris, if you are thinking of replacing your $50 DMM you got from the auction with a newer meter, let me know. I take it off your hands;)

Possible meeting room

If people are willing to travel to Georgetown - a great location for anatech and myself - the police station has a large community room that would accomodate as many and more (not sure about Jensen Imperials though).
The Halton Amateur Radio Club meets there on a regular basis, and you can't beat the price. Not sure about having a BBQ .

Thank you for all the kind words about the meet. It seems everybody enjoyed the meet. I know I did. My wife Deborah says she wants a camera just like the one used for the photos. She enjoyed the meet also.It was a pleasure meeting all of you and talking about our hobbies. There are some talented people who showed up-wonderful speakers, wonderful sounding. I hope to have another meet at my place towards the end of August and will keep you posted. This time we will start earlier and with a bit more organization.Regards-John.

Ray the ribbons were aurum cantus APR 2.1 from parts express about $94, each and the replacment ribbons are about $9.00 plus the shipping and taxes. I burned one mistakenly with a 800hz crossover and too much power, but easy and cheap to repair if abused.

Hi John,
I'd consider Deborah to be part of the gang no matter where we meet. She enjoys audio and has an opinion, and probably an honest outlook on sound. That means more unaffected from advertising, unlike the rest of us.

Nice to know there are ribbons that are affordable to repair. That's so unlike audio these days!

Hey Cal,
You would have enjoyed this meet. The speakers were right up your alley, and so was some of the amplification. However, I doubt it's worth the airfare to get here. Too bad, because I'd love to see yours, and get to Burning Amp again.

Chris, let me know if you want to get togeter and you can show me the analog testing you talked about. the tweeters in the other montors were from GR research, Neo 3 planar with the sealing caps mounted to seal from the chamber, these are also a very good value at about $45,
sorry I didn't get back sooner, my phone and modem had suffered from a lighting strike, from down the road, took 5 days to get it going!!! OH and I asked, and got wife aproval to host a event if you want to rotate the location

Hi Andrew,
Sure, we can get together for a 'splaination on that. It's pretty basic stuff that is surprisingly accurate if you are careful with your tests. At one point in time, I had it programmed into a Texas Instruments TI-58C calculator. Mind you, I had to re-allocate memory space on the fly as the program ran. I didn't have any add-in stuff like you'd find on the HP 41 calculator. Later it ran on an original IBM PC in basic, printing with a dot-matrix printer (9 pin). That was probably a good 20 years ago or more now.

Your speakers intrigued me and I would love to hear them hear. I have a Cyrus Mono X system, and a Marantz 300DC (that needs a new speaker relay now). I'm sure they would sound great in the living room. My wife, Anita, would like to hear them as well.

I'm really sorry to hear about your lightning zap situation. Is that all you lost (I hope!)?

Best, Chris
