Given that we haven't seen that many of them over the last 57 years I assume they were not that much of a success.
Looking at the drawing I don't think it would have been truly omni-directional.
Horizontally it certainly covers 360deg but vertically it would appear while the equator expands pole-to-pole shrinks. This would limit vertical dispersion to around 90deg I'd guess.

and what about a circular ribbon ?
worth trying, but a bit hard to make. Not sure how you would make something that would increase in diameter when driven from one side. Gives me an idea, though.
It was cut vertically, several gaps.
