Geddes on Waveguides

Dear Dr Geddes,

CD crossover has usually high Q and impedance drops significantly. It shouldn't drop below 75% of a woofer minimum. Could you post ESP12 impedance?

The ESP12 is obsolete and no longer available, and I no longer have data for it. One hasn't been built in more than three years now.

The Abbey is similar to the ESP12 and its impedance looks a lot like what you have posted except that its a single LF peak not two as in a ported enclosure. The Abbey impedance would not drop as low as the 4 ohms that you show, it would be more like 8 ohms. This is just the input impedance level of the pad (a two resistor voltage divider). You can make it pretty much anything that you want. The HF impedance is basically nothing since it gets swamped out by the HF pad.

Tell me about it. Took 2 notch filters to get an impedance that's workable enough for the CD EQ to work. On the upside, the notches make the rest of the filter simple, I'm actually squeaking by with a 5uF cap and a level matching resistor. Sure, the power handling won't be super, but it's pretty darned clean at my levels, and the (modeled) phase behavior is excellent.

Sure they are, it's called "active" digital crossover with eq. and time delay. :p

Certainly handy but I don't really want to digitize my wax just to listen to it. I've done active/digital, and it's very easy to work, and powerful besides. But the inability to play with different setups, the need to use an A/D converter for LPs and whatnot all precludes it from being realistic for me. Plus, I have TONS of gear in the rig already, an extra amp and crossover don't fit on the racks.

Besides, I love a challenge. It's why I build my own horns.

Crossovers for compression drivers are never simple.

Yeah I was at an audio show recently and someone who apparently liked what he was hearing remarked that I must be using a very simple crossover. You could see the disappointment on his face when I told him otherwise. I don't think my speakers sounded quite as good to him after that... but maybe the amp still sounded good.
