Following my small tapped horn sub build (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/164199-th-micro-6-5-tapped-horn.html) it is now time for a set of small (again) satellite speakers to complement them, this is a proposal only, and as such not yet fully investigated.

Take a look at...

...and tell me what you think, am I on the right track here ?

Planet10 - why not try to break new ground, even if this would prove be a failure (I confess that have my doubts as well) it would still be a rather nice attempt at forging our passion with that of our better halfs :)

Simulations show no big deviations, but simulations only goes so far, i can see your point and it is indeed a valid one, but bare in mind that i will not be inended for use below 100Hz.

Crossblade - where is the beauty and challange in basic boring old cubic boxes ??? (but I agree, it would be easy and probably sound rather good aswell)

This is a quick rendering of my drawings, the fixing feature on the rear piece facing the wall is slightly different, and I will update my drawings accordingly.

If you believe the factory specs, the sim says you'll be fine to XO to a pair of woofers at ~120 Hz. My measures are a bit different, and boxes built to test which are more accurate indicate somewhere inbetween.

Factory specs are the flat curves, measured is the one with the big bump.

Careful XO could deal with the FR (this is where the droopy nature of a 2nd order PLLXO could come in handy), but the big issues to my mind is the potential for serious loss of midrange "cuppiness" due to no room to breath.

If you go for it, build a test box 1st.

I'm not that impressed so far, but it has only been a few hours, do they need some break in time ?[/QUOTE]

Mine improved with some break in time for sure .

This weekend I've been playing around with a PC based setup using the FX120 in a smallish ( 8) liter BR . The amp is a Ta2024 inside a topping external soundcard .
I lined up my threeway alongside for some A/B comparisons .. bit unfair perhaps :p .
So far .. Im definitely impressed by the FX120 s wonderful detail .. it seems to do most things very well . Somethings lacks ... for me that is , compared to my threeway ..I think the its a soundstage thing ... a little lifeless perhaps .. not sure .

If the FX120 sounds unimpressive, you might consider the amp you are using. I haven't tried FX120, but I have a pair of F120A which sound pitiful on any SS amp I have used. Put tubes on the F120A and they sing very sweetly!

My FX120's sounded quite nice over at a friends with his Musical Fidelity A300 integrated, so they will work with solid state. Haven't heard them with a T or D amp. Personally, I like them with tubes, so no desire to try something else.

I tried a test recording using my wife's Flip, but I don't consider the sound quality to be high enough to post.

If they are anything like their extinct big brother, the open baffle must sound brutal. FWIW, the FX200 were very enclosure dependent, and had a tendency to sound forward and unforgiving. Strangely, they radically mellowed out when placed in the factory recommended bass reflex box.

That wall mount enclosure design is essentially going to act like an OB with a sort of detuned 1/2w stub sucking some frequencies out of the back wave -- a very quick calculation tells me around 300-450Hz. Since that's just above your baffle step, I'm not sure it'll have much effect.

Still, the wall mount enclosure is a cool concept. :) If it were me, I might make it a little deeper, until you get the factory recommended volume, and use mini-onken type ports coming out the sides. That way you can actually wall mount it. Some deflex or a home made equivalent right behind the driver would be a good idea. You don't want reflections right through that thin cone.

Thanks for all your responses, I have been looking around and they seem to need some 40 hours or so of breaking in period before they sound as intended, I'm just up to 1/5 of that, so i guess it´s all in order.

My newly purchased Behringer crossover (2310) packed in last night, only 6 months old, The horrible rattle that resulted fron this breakdown was a though expierience for the FX120's, and i was sure they had not survied, but i was wrong, fortunatly phew.

I will soon move the FX120's over to 5 litre closed boxes, also prototypes (they look awfull) just to see what happens.

The small sealed boxes where not that bad (as long as you did not look at them that is), and they certainly sounded larger then what their size would let you to belive.

What drove to abandon these boxes where ehh.. well I was bored.

Seeing as I now find myself in new surroundings, smallish apartment, i want to explore the concept of ultra miniature boxes even further, why not try as much as possible before settling down right.

Why I did not go for the wall mount design in this case is another story, but I will try it, eventually, despite the risks.

For now I'm going to try something a litte bit different, the FX120 will reside in a very small box messuring 156x156x156mm (outside dims) made of 12mm mdf, on the rear there will be a 3,5" preeless passive radiator, smaller in diameter but with grater excusrion (they where cheap).

I will post pictures as soon as i have some, the build will take place during the course of the summer and is to be regarded as a fun and not to serious experiment.

I'm not expecting a miracle to happen, or a nirvana audio expirience, I'm simply having some fun with a great little driver, eventually I will look into something a bit more serious, but for now this is what I feel like trying out.

Has anyone out there tried somethin simmillar ?

Best reg´s / martinsson
