I like hard rock, so here goes...

Van Halen- Ice Cream Man, Eruption, solo on "Only One Way to Rock" live w/ Sammy
Vivian Campell- Dio- Rainbow in the Dark
George Lynch- Dokken- In my Dreams, Mr Scary, For a Million Years
Steve Vai- For the Love of God, Blue Powder
Joe Satriani- Just about anything he does on the first album Surf w/ the Alien
Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson- Don't tell Me you Love Me
David Gilmore- Comfortably Numb

If im not missing any post...how come nobody likes Steve Vai that much?!
Steve vai
For the love of God,
Tender surrender,
Crying machine,

Joe Satriani
Always with me...
Flying in a blue dream,

almost anything and everything from SRV and Jimmy Hendrix.
and not to forget Alan Holdsworth

My vote is for John Frusciante's solo on I Could Have Lied. Both lyrically and structurally it is just perfection in how it conveys and supports the emotion of the song, and then gets out of the way. A perfect fit and achingly beautiful.

Perfect analysis, I'm glad it was mentioned. It doesn't however contend for #1 on my list but definitely top 10.

I think it is impossible for anything to trump Hendrix. He died in in 1970. Who was doing anything even remotely close from 1967 to 1970? The answer is nobody. He took guitar playing to whole new levels and lit a fire under the hindquarters of his contemporaries. My favs: The wind cries mary, 1983..., Voodoo Chile slight return, All along the watchtower.

Some others I thought deserved mentioning "Life without you" by SRV, it takes you through the grieving process with his solo sounding like various forms of crying.

Neil Young "Cinammon Girl". If you can pull of a single note solo you should get some mention. I can't remember the names of the songs but Stephen Stills has some awesome solos on the Manasas album.

I should mention I don't grade the solo based on technicality but rather on its ability to contribute to the emotional message of the song with out stealing the show. It should be intergral without being the focus.
