Suggested Notch filter for W3-593 and Delsol combo?

Can someone help me decipher what is the correct notch filter that should be use with W3-593 driver in the Delsol speakers?

I have found the following filter information on the W3-871s drivers which should be compatible with W3-593s.

Information here posted by Svein_B (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=1042639#post1042639)

Cyburgs Needle and The Lancetta(fo=2.6KHz)

Resistor 6.8ohms
Capacitor 6.8uf
Inductor 0.56mH

ZaphAudio

Very narrow low-diffraction box (Fo=2.1 KHZ).

Resistor 6.8ohms
Capacitor 8.2uf
Inductor 0.7mH

5.75" wide box (Fo=3.3KHz)

Resistor 6.8ohm
Capacitor 3.3uF
Inductor 0.7mH

There is also filter information for Vikash Chauhan's Fullrange W3-871S Monitors (http://www.vikash.info/audio/W3-871S/index.asp)

Resistor 6.8ohms
Capacitor 3.3uf
Inductor 0.7mH

It appears the DelSol dimensions are closer to the latter two bookshelf configurations (R 6.8ohms, C 3.3uf,
I 0.7mH), so I assume this may the correct notch filter?

There's a word for describing when someone dredges up an old thread just to ask a tangentially-related question, but it escapes me now. Heh.

I've personally been very interested in the effects of slot-loading an acoustic mass (port or PR), ever since I read about speakers by VMPS that do the same, with a passive radiator. Pekar, did you do any special modeling for the tunnel that the vent exits into in your Del Sol design? You mentioned earlier that bass performance seems to suffer if the enclosure is turned on its side, eliminating the slot loading.

In AkAbak, would I model this as driver -- chamber -- vent -- duct -- orifice, or would I model it as driver -- chamber -- vent -- chamber -- orifice?

Finished My DelSols

I finished my DelSols. This was my first time speaker build. I learned a lot and I enjoyed the project. I built two pair simultaneously. Just in case I screwed something up, the odds were better I would have one good pair of DelSols upon completion. J To my surprise I completed both pair with out a hitch.

For my Delsols I modified the dimensions by lengthening the height by .75” and narrowed the width by .5" (internal dimensions stayed about the same: from 6.5" x 5" x 8.25" to 7.25" x 4.5" x 8.25). The reason for the dimension change was mainly due to my inability to track down affordable ½” thick hardwood that could be cut to 6.5” width. The irony is that I ended you using Birch ply for the faceplates in the end. I followed the suggested MDF construction for the body of the speakers, but enclosed bottom.

I used Tang Band W3-593s for the drivers. Most of the builds I read using these drivers suggested a notch filter, so I decided to add a notch filter to each drivers (R 6.8ohms, C 3.3uf, I 0.7mH). I tested the DelSols with and with out the notch filter and to my ears notch filter offers a more pleasant sound.

I tested the speaker with an unmodified Sonic Impact T-Amp (original version) and a work-in-progress SureElectronics 2024 Tripath amp. While I am not an audiophile by any means and I am very pleased with these speaker. They match up well with either amp. They reproduce clarity in the music that I formally did not notice. Their range is pretty respectable for their size. I must say they can adequately fill small to a medium size room at moderate volume (not wall shakes but good for the casual listening). I notice that they have a definite sweet spot in terms of listening location, so placement is key. All in all, I am extremely pleased with my DelSols.

I would like to thank Jesse for the great design and the helpful building suggestions.

Delsol

Hello, I'd like to build my first speaker project and my criteria are:

1. efficient drivers (to pair with t class amp)
2. small size (to fit in my kitchen)
3. low price

Member gychang has mentioned an interesting speaker that fits my criteria:

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product.aspx?productid=51-075

...but I'm not sure about the box to put them in. The Delsol cabinet seems to fit my criteria, but I'm not sure it would work with this larger speaker. Any suggestions on how to modify the Delsol or another cabinet would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

My guess is the box as originally designed can not be used with the Pioneer.
t-amp may not have enough power for moderate listening levels in a smallish room...

I don't know about the box, but the driver should do: •Sensitivity: 96dB (1W/1M) - which is plenty even at 8 Ohms (and 8 Ohms mean half the power from the Tripath).

Thanks for all the useful replies.

I thought that the 96db rating might be a bit off... but 90db is still probably efficient enough for a t-amp.

Anyway, regarding the Delsol... Seems like it wouldn't work with this driver (without modification). Can anyone suggest another small box that might be appropriate. Perhaps the mini Fonken???

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

No such thing as a miniFonken ... i assume you mean mFonken = milliFonken?

It is designed for the FE127, but the Pioneer has been used before as a budget substitute for the FE127 in some other boxes so there is a chance it will work out (but not likely be optimum for the Pioneer)

Dave if I use the FF83 or 103 will there be any modifications to be done to the box?

To get optimum performance you most assurably want to modify the box (ie start with the concept and design a new box). For FE103 Tony G has already done it in the form of the Solo 103. I'll be doing my own variation soon (103s on the way). I chose the FF85 over the FE83 because it took a mFonken size box to get any bass out of them (and the FE127eN gives better overall performance)

Built and sounding good

I apreciate this forum is pretty much out of date since the drivers are no longer available.. but I found a set of Aura NS3-194-8E's locally (in Japan) and put together a set of cabinets using 18mm block board instead of 3/4" (20mm) MDF which I can't find locally. Made the cabs 10mm shorter (Due to a bit of creative measuring:confused:). Not sure what the face wood is (I can't read the Japanese label) but it's 13mm (1/2") thick and seems to work OK.
I'll post pictures maybe.

I'm no expert, but to my ears these speakers sound great!

Very pleasantly surprised.

Hi Bill,

Where in Japan did you buy the drivers from? And how much did you pay for them? A friend of mine is planning a trip to Japan soon and I hope he can bring the drivers back for me.

I have always wanted to try the DelSol as my first DIY speaker project but have not been able to find the Aura NS3-194-8E.
