Breaking in Teflon Caps

Hi Aardvarkash10,

I can't understand why are you attacking a simple test.

Now I understand that is not 'controlled' and I agree that a blind test is better and much more significative.

But when you state:

Next problem is you know the test is occurring and what the potential outcomes are. Need to get rid of that too.

Next problem is you know the base set-up. Need to get rid of that.

In a medical trial people knows they're taking a drug (that could even be a placebo), knows how they take it and what is the objective.

To me seems different to what you're stating...

Next problem is we have no idea if this is just you, or a population that can detect (or not) the differences. Need more people (subjects).

I agree, I've tried with others (in a home-made blind test) and I'm suggesting to try for that reason.;)

Hi cddb,

Are we talking burn in or wear out? If you are hearing a difference why do you think the cap is getting better.

I was simply stating that a new cap could change its sound during the first hours and after that it stabilize.

but please dont tell me they are "better" components on this basis alone. I just said this on another thread;

I'm not saying that.

Blind ABX testing tells us there really is a difference but not which is better, only which is more popular.

I agree.

Interesting- I don't really know how much the cap guys make,

The mark-up on V-Caps is about 100% of the manufacturer's price from what I understand from a very good friend of mine who knows the maker. I believe that they are made by RTI Electronics, who make most of the expensive audio caps. My friend got his Teflon caps directly from RTI and they were still very expensive. And the break-in period was very interesting, if we are still discussing that.:)

Hi Aardvarkash10,

Because you asked for comment. Not an attack, more a constructive criticism

Yep - because the circumstances and the purpose of the testing is different. This is the thing about setting up research trials - there is no one size fits all template, but there is a set of recognised protocols

Cool! Good luck with it - your experiment can only add to the knowledge we have.

Of course the known presence of a mysterious box (with a clever name attached and probably empty) queers the deal as well.

John

:)If its cleverly named, mysterious, empty and present, it can probably be sold to an "audiophile" for a three or four figure sum. Helps if it has XLR connections labelled "balanced input" preferably goldplated. And a knob labelled "impedance matching". A flashing blue LED model is usually available for 20% more.

With instructions for burn-in attached of course!:spin:

You people amaze me with your off handed remarks as you are obviously the end of the known universe. In your mind no audiophile listens to anything. They are lead by the nose like a pig to slaughter. Your inflated self worth is amusing to me .

That's got some precedent. One of the audio magazines bought some extremely expensive speaker cables (I think they were MIT) with special termination boxes on each end, supposedly containing proprietary networks to minimize reflections or some such. Unlike most purchasers of multi-kilobuck cables, they cut the boxes open. In one, they found... absolutely nothing. In the other, there was simply a 150R shunt resistor, which had zero effect other than to make it appear to an ohmmeter check that there was SOMETHING in the boxes and that would cause no problems if it burned out.

One guy (at least) has built an entire business on stuff that does absolutely nothing. The product range spans jars of rocks to special "quantum dot" chips that are claimed to rearrange digital data, but of course do no such thing.

The list of audio related products, that this description can adhere to, is longer than anybody would care to hear of. The problem as I see it, is that if a product from the extraordinary category, actually has some merit, it will most likely drown in the quack products.

:eek:Right back atcha...

So it's okay to propose/expound opinion and supposition as fact (which is clearly evident from the offense taken to opposing viewpoints here), based solely on singular observation without a clue as to the realities of valid testing and verification..... but not okay to offer any sort of rebuttal to said opinions and suppositions...?

Perhaps this thread should be renamed to "Mindless speculation and supposition applied to one persons beliefs ????"

I don't. I just spent about 1.5 minutes on Google to find something further for Curly to whine about.

Ok, fair enough, but not really needed yet.

The whining is fine as is :D

BTW, just noticed your Centurion pic somewhere, nice toy. We have an engine from a Centurion, that we play with from time to time here. Maaaaan it's loud! (and thirsty)

Magura :)
