what is medium density cotton?

Hard to descibe, easy to show. Our primamry source has been vintage Canadian speakers. closest new stuff is a recycled denim house insulation -- unfortunately minimu 3" thickness (we haven't figured out how to slice it). 10-12mm thick would be very useful.

wool felt is the brown carpet-like damping material isnt it?

Carpet underlay is typically higher density than you'd like but it has been pressed into service.

will glass wool do the job?

Needs to be thicker ,,, which in the uFonekn is tough because there is so little room.

The FF85K's are back in stock at Madisound. I ordered a pair yesterday. If they come in soon enough I may try to build a pair of uFonkens this weekend. If they come in late, well, i'll be drinking alot of Sprite instead of beer.

I have a really old 2.1 system connected to our bedroom TV. I'm thinking of keeping the sub and powering the uFonkens instead of the cube speakers. The sub plays into the 150Hz range I think so it will be a halfway decent match. The cube speakers don't sound too bad but there is a definite gap between them and the sub which I hope the uFonkens will close in on.

More natural sound should be when uFonkens are used without any crossover, and this sub running until ~90hz, this sub has got small speaker, so it should be fast until ~90hz, a god match for very fast bass from uFonkens.
But uFonkens a little bit overloading on bass if you listed to them loudly.

isn't it a creative soundblaster 2.1? i used to have it with my pc... i think the sub is really working more like a just a woofer, not going really low, nor doing it good enough for the fostex drivers, and anyway i think you should not use the amplification built-in for the satellites... that won't make thw fostex sing, and if i don't go wrong it's kind of equalized appositely for their satellites... but anyway everything can be changed one at a time, maybe the sub driver, can be used in a mdf ported box...

The system I have is Cambridge Soundworks, but I think Creative may have had one that looks identical...meaning one of the two companies just rebadged it.

I ran some tests with it earlier this week. It definitely has some EQ settings as the highs are over emphasized when I run my Frugelhorns off it. There doesn't appear to be any high-pass filter though. I will post some measurements once i finish building the uFonkens.

The woofer is definitely low-passed but it isn't the best sound. No matter where you place it, it sounds boomy. I might be better off without it. In the end, I'll probably end up buying or building another T-amp to power my uFonkens.

Any suggestions on a similar mini-subwoofer build I could do to complement them? I'm looking for simplicity as they will just be connected to the TV in our bedroom.

It is hard to beat a modified SDX7. We are currently building 5 1 foot sealed cubes with the surplus Foster amp that Jack Hidley is selling. The limiting size of these is the plate amp -- the SDX7 can be used in a box less than half the size we are using.. The SDX7 is perceived as pricey but i figure for what it does it is really good value, For less expensive woofers we are playing with the Silver Flute (the 5 1/2" so far, but i note that Ed Schillings Cube uses the 8")

The Sprites have been fun, but now it’s time to move on. Finally got started on the micro-Fonkens! These are so small! Makes them harder to assemble than I thought it would be.

I only have six of the small clamps, so partial assembly, one cabinet at a time. And at the rate I work...expected completion is about one month.

And since they are so small, I think I'll go with fiber stuffing rather than the foam lining I used on the Fonkens Prime.

Looks like we were doing the same thing today. Here are my uFonkens. Haven't decided how I'm going to finish them.

Total build time was about 7 hours (I work slow -- and that includes a few beer breaks).

I started with a 2x4 sheet of birch ply from Lowes. I ripped 2 boards 145mm wide using the table saw.
I used my mitre saw to cut the rest since the pieces are so narrow. I did all the 145mm pieces first and then ripped the remainder of the second board down to 102mm for the inner pieces. All the measurements in the PDF were perfect and everything fit flawlessly. I came up short for wood and I didn't want to rip another length off the original sheet so I used some spare MDF for the braces. I have enough wood left to build another pair if I wanted.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Nice work!
The driver cut-out looks like a nice fit!

I just took some measurements of my new uFonkens. The microphone was set about 4 ft from the speakers and wasn't moved during the tests.

Graph1
Green: Frugelhorns w/ FE126eN
Purple: uFonkens w/ FF85K
Yellow: Cambridge Soundworks cube

At first glance it looks as though the uFonkens drop off 10db starting at 140Hz but comparing that with the Frugelhorns the room comes into play considerably below 200Hz. I adjusted for sensitivity and it looks like the uFonkens start rolling off around 200Hz while the Frugels get a slight boost. Depending on the room, the uFonkens could easily be used anywhere down to 100Hz. The CS cubes are obviously crap and conk out at about 300Hz.

Graph2
Green: uFonkens powered off SonicImpact Gen2 T-amp
Purple: uFOnkens powered off Cambridge Soundworks amp

It's pretty obvious here that some EQing is done to enhance the CS cube speakers. From the first graph you can see they roll off above 5KHz and CS compensated by boosting that frequency range. 100-200Hz also appears to be boosted and there is a LP filter at about 100Hz. So the conclusion is, I need a real amp for my uFonkens...the CS cube won't do.

Graph3

Yellow: Introducing the CS subwoofer

The sub is really only good for boosting 100-200Hz and doesn't add much below that. This graph was taken with the sub at minimum volume. I would have to mod it and add a steep LP filter at 100Hz if I wanted to make any use of it.
