DIY Video Projector

andrewjames1000, that's basicly what I have done but I don't think this is a route everyone wants to go.

Vince: I have to admit that I have read this thread through once, that was when I bumped in to it. Most of it "back then" was just mambojambo to me and I ignored all the stuff I didn't understand so what I'm going to do right now is start re-reading this thing from square one.
I am aware that you (and probably others as well) don't like repeating yourself but I'm trying to go the easiest route and basicly filling this thread with **** by asking questions which probably really have been covered before. I'm sorry about that. It's just that is easier but right now I'm really intrested in start reading it from scratch so I'll get on it.

Okay I admit I'm having some trouble reading it. It's just that there is so much non-useful stuff for me right now and I really right now (and I mean _now_) just want to know how to do the cooling because it's all I need to complete the thing.

I'm probably going to install the coolers today and I really hope i'm not going to screw it up.

Dont buy this!!!

I must say I'm actually quite impressed as to the way people are developing new ways to sell crummy old scams:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1325086414

I'd actually get my wallet out there and then after seeing those screenshots (and the shot of some guy's VERY nice home theatre!) Good salesmanship I think!

...my 2.5" panel and lens WITH THE BACKLIGHT IT CAME WITH is brighter than these dumb 100" tv plans!

16:9 Projection converter?

Have a look at this:

http://www.visr.com/Panamorph.htm

It is a lens designed to go between the projector and the wall - and stretches the image horizontally, giving a projected 16:9. This means you can set your DVD player to output in its widescreen mode (where the whole screen in filled, but the people etc look stretched vertically) and the lens stretches it back out to widescreen!

The bit that caught my eye was the fact that it uses the whole lcd panel, therefore giving better widescreen resolution and also increases brightness by 33%!

And the cost of this contraption - $2,495 ....yeah right.... Does anyone who knows a bit more about lenses and optics tell me what parts would be required to make an equivalent?

Hi all, been following this for about a month and a half now, but haven't posted due to university exams...anyway got some ideas that i would like to put into practice for my Video projector and you guys have been an absolute fountain of knowledge...so thanks...

I saw in a local second hand store the other day an incar Video Module made by Necvox, It's a 5.6" TFT LCD screen with all the right inputs (and an on screen display). My question is that the resolution of this screen is 960x234 and is this resolution suitable? the 234 seems quite small?! I'll probably only be using it for watching movies but I read some of you guys talking about Line doublers? can anyone tell me anymore about this?

You've probably heard all this before, but I would really appreciate any help.

Cheers

Scot_Lad, I was wondering what kind of light source it was that you were using? I can't really find anything suitable apart from Halogen which will probably just be too hot, maybe not I might give it a try. Have you come across a really bright fluorescent in the UK recently that might be of any use?

Cheers

Okay, the coolers are in now and noise is just absolutely terrible!
It's not annoying humm, it's sounds more like some hardcore työstökone(whatever that is in english;)! Some big machine used in factories anyway.
But it seems to be working, I run it for 10 minutes with just fresnel projecting white box to the wall and touched the fresnel every now and then and it wasn't hot, you could keep your hand on it.

The thing looks suprisingly much like the one on my webpage.

Now I'm just lacking the printer extension cable to actually get some data to the thing and I'll probably need to get a 230volt "potikka" whatever that is in english... same thing in amplifier you adjust the volume with, that I can adjust the rolling speed of the coolers..

Thank you people for the help with the cooling anyway:)
As I would have got any but it's working now anyway (hopefully with longer sessions too).
I wanted to buy an heat-meter thing but couldn't get appropriate one because the ones I saw could only show to like 40 celsius or so..

B-

I don't mind question. When I said I've been through this in the first 3 weeks of this thread, I mean I've seen it all. So, if I can answer any questions, I will, if I have an aswer.
I stay quite when I don't know an answer or I point to a reference.

Anyone can ask me anything. I get emails sent to me from time to time to give me or ask for information.

Good Luck.

REAR Projection

Hello all!
Hey! I just got finished with some more scrounging for parts for my sons science project and have come accross a high gain screen for rear projection tv in excellent condition I have seen these on surplus sites for around $350.00 I got this for nothing. I am going to try to do a rear projection set up this time around.
This screen has a fresnel lens (projector side) and a linticular lens on the (viewing side) this should increase brightness as well as contrast.

Will be posting all results as soon as possible.

i revamped my setup. redesigned the cooling systems on the projector. its using a single nearly silent 120 mm nice high output aluminum fan i found lying around to cool the main bulb area. i mounted the already silent squirrel cage to the back with standard bolts. spent some time with a hot glue gun and some cardboard boxes and ported it so all the air goes between the LCD and projector.

looks a lot more professional. even though its still using duct tape. need to integrate the wiring so it uses a single power chord, not the 4 it uses right now.

all is not well though. tragedy struck.

i was moving back into my dorm and being none-too-careful with the lcd matrix. there's something vaguely like ribbon cable coming off the side, attached to a small circuit board that interfaces with the real controller circuitry. something musta happened cause the circuit board is no longer quite so attached to the cable. broken. $!#$.

i tried soldering it back together. set it all up and flicked the power on and was delighted to see a no input sign bouncing across the screen again. about half a second later the screen had an eppelleptic fit, slowly chaotically driving itself towards simple blackness. that was the last i saw, a no input sign bouncing around and then chaos and blackness overcoming it. it was possibly one of the saddest moments of my life.

i'm quite distressed and a bit depressed. $280. ****. i dont have the dough to throw around $280.

planning on reassembling everything and shipping it back to viewsonic. i'm sure my reassembly job wont be perfect, but all i can do is pray they dont notice or dont care. if i dont get a replacement, i'm going to cry. hell, i think i'll probably cry anyways.

looking for relatively cheap 20 inch diagonal fresnels. sick of not having the whole screen area.

Forrest,

Sorry, I've been on holiday and haven't read the forum for a bit. I've not found out about a suitable light yet - have been busy as hell at work and since I'm travelling nearly 350 miles a week to see my other half (must be love - it's costing me a fortune), I've had no time to do a lot on it.

I am waiting to hear about importing a LOA from america, I'm sure you'll hear about it as soon as something happens!! I will get back when I have news to report.

Cheers,

Chris.

LOA lights

Has anyone purchased the Lights of America light at Home Depot. If you have could you please reply with the city and state of the store that carries them. I tried to find them at the local store but of course they don't have them. They said that the could do a store to store transfer if they could find a store that had them. That was 1 1/2 weeks ago and I haven't heard back.

Well today I went to find s light source, the first thing I came across was a light made by philips and produces 1480 lumens, I bought it but it is not up to the job! I will go to a proper store ratehr then the department store I bought it from and look for something like a LOA.
