Assembling the LU1014D IMS TO-247 Adapter

Exciting! Were you able to get the right pins, too, for the IMS boards?

Yes, I ordered those directly from Samtec. The pins are the most expensive part of this assembly if you can believe that. A bag of 600 pins weighs almost 2lbs.

I just soldered some of these by hand today to my already populated LD IMS boards.

They aren’t pretty like the paste-and-skillet method, but they will work. It helps that the bushings don’t melt with an iron on or next to them.

The Gerbers are freely available and you can order IMS PCBs for $5 plus shipping from JLCPCB.

If you only need a few, post a request in the swap meet. I’m sure someone in EU will have spares.

Neat amp and good way to use low cost LU1014D’s from Aliexpress.

I suppose I could sell these on my shop if there was enough demand.

It’s a special part made by Samtec. It may be available from Mouser the part is easier to obtain direct from Samtec.

Thanks for these files, @xrk971. Is there any reason to include the SM file for the bottom side? And is the paste layer just there because it was generated? Can't see the reason for it with hand soldering, though doesn't hurt to include. Thanks.

There is no bottom side as it is a single sided board. Bottom side is bare aluminum as this is an IMS board.

That's why I was asking; board houses of course usually don't mind getting superfluous files like that, but I didn't know if I was missing something else as to why those two files were in the zip file.

I believe this shows the layer config just for anybody's curiosity.

I think the "thermal insulation" layer shown in the layer config diagram linked above is less thermal insulation and more of electrical insulation. This dielectric layer has reasonably low thermal resistance so heat can travel through it to the aluminum base layer.

I have used these PCBs from JLCPCB and they work well in transferring heat from the Lovoltech to the heatsink.
