• WARNING: Tube/Valve amplifiers use potentially LETHAL HIGH VOLTAGES.
Building, troubleshooting and testing of these amplifiers should only be

Today I bought 2 9x5 chassis for my next idea and some wire blocks to make a test rig.

I also hit the jackpot and found another 572VA 120: 62-0-62 toroid for 20$!!! I needed one but it was gonna cost 114$ for a 500VA Hammond (And that's cheap compared to Digi-Key).

The 300VA was too small so now it's upgraded and kicks proper *** again!

I also bought the shelves the amp is sitting on. Now I can move in here again.

^that looks great!

Here's my build in planning, Williamson derivative with 6CG7, 6N1P, and pentode connected 12AV5GA. Spare parts build, so some creativity will be needed to make it look good. Also my first time building monoblocks in years.

Not my build, but here is my friend's just finished 5D22/4-400A monoblocks. All C-core power transformers, chokes and output transformers were done by himself. Probably the best amp I've heard, even when it's a bit compromised due to limited available space. I owned some GM70 and 845 amps before. It sounds so good that I'm planning to have a 845 driving 5D22 with 866A rectifiers built soon.

Is the 4-400a wired triode or pentode? needs a lot or air at high voltages 14 cubic ft

Thanks Koda...those meters are £3 a pop on ebay UK, how long have yours lasted? To be honest they look like cheap sh*t. However to get the same quantity of decent meters you'd be looking at one hundred times that price. Then and again, on the other hand you could be buying meters that fall to bits after a week.

Hells teeth, the way of the amp fettler is hard, what we all need is patron's with lots of cash who'd be happy to pay us to build amps all day and give us a few grand for parts : )

"I've never had one fail yet" That's good to hear, I'll give them a punt when I next need some. I've put my own bulbs in meters before - drill a small hole for bulb wiring then glued the bulb down. I used a little bulb off a Xmas light. It was tricky to place the bulb for best effect though, think I ended up using a Rizzla to defuse the light.
