The mystery is why other examples of this amp don't have hum, given the elementary grounding mistake in the PCB design.

I did some more research in french and read some people complaining about a slight hum but they described it more like 50Hz, it's probably the same thing though. Those saying it was very quiet might have had pretty inefficient speakers.

You can probably leave the cap on the board. Drill the holes out where the diode grounds were and pass wire from the diodes (with heat shrink) through the PCB soldering directly onto the ground of the cap on the underside of the board.

The ground pads were actually connected through 4 tiny little tracks to the ground plain so I just cut these out and left the pad isolated, then ran some nice thick insulated copper wire to make the necessary connections.
