I'm having an issue with a kt88 project: the 5ar4 rectifier is sparking. (The "diode mod" is installed.) I've tried a couple of tubes (no change) and I'm afraid of damaging them. So, I'm wondering if there would be any harm in using one of those solid state substitutes while I'm tracking down the problem.

Shouldn't be a problem, but you'll probably have a higher B+ and it'll be present immediately at power on. I'd suspect that there is too large an input cap on the 5AR4. Run each plate of the rectifier through a 10W 100R resistance, and see if that fixes it.
