Output transformer for EL84 PP

Hi,

Years ago I had a pair of Leak TL12 Plus amplifiers which I really liked. Prices for these are very high now so I would like to build a pair of similar monoblocks.

My question is can anyone recommend a pair of modern Output transformers of similar quality to the ones made by Leak ? I don't mind buying Chinese. I have looked extensively online but have got to the point where I would value an opinion based on experience.

Yours,
Jolyon

I would look at one of the Dynakitparts reproduction Z-565, arguably one of the best transformers ever made for the 6BQ5. Unlike the originals, these have 4 and 8 ohm taps rather than 8 and 16, since 4 ohm speakers are much more common these days than 16 ohm speakers.

Try searching for Mullard 5-10 output transformers or EL84 push pull transformers.
As you are UK based, Primary windings (Building the Mullard 5-10 Amplifier – Primary Windings) and VVT (VTP12925-1100 - Mullard 5-10 PP UL Output Transformer EL84 10 Watt 6600 ohms/valve) both do suitable ones and are in the UK. I have never used either.
And you can also get Hammond transformers from a UK supplier if you search a little.
I watch every day on EBAY.uk and the prices are delirious when there is something interesting.
I bought it not long ago and it works very well.
it is a clone of the audax TU101 under steroid

The Z565 is a price/performance champion. Unfortunately, the OP is in the UK and shipping charges, import duties, etc. are going to jack his costs WAY up compared to a US based buyer. :(

Given the Canada/UK Commonwealth relationship, perhaps the OP can get a decent deal on Hammond model 1650F "iron". While not as good as Sowter or the Z565, Hammond stuff is not junk.

I get that but Sowter's costs are so high I was wondering if anything from the far east was comparable.
Are you prioritizing sound or cost ? If you want a leak then get a leak. If you settle with less buy some cheap. Or, buy a lot of transformers from various sources, build a number of prototypes and then tell us which one to prefer. But it won't be cheap.

Hi huggygood,

Several builder of the Baby Huey amplifier including me have used EL34 6.6k and KT88 4k Toroidy output transformers ( Transformatory toroidalne - Producent transformatorow Toroidy.pl ) and I can recommend them without hesitation :) They are very good and the price is fair, nearly half of Plitron ( Plitron Manufacturing - Engineered to Perform Like No Others ) with the advantage of very reasonable shipment cost.

You can buy them from TME their distributor for standard version but if you want the very nice potted version (see picture, the sticker is easily removed as you can see on pvphil picture) it is made on request directly from Toroidy very quickly :D

You can find some information from Bfpca here : EL34 Baby Huey Amplifier

Au revoir,
Marc

I never heard the Leak amps but I've heard many different EL84\6BQ5 amps. I've also modified and repaired a few too. So far the best vintage I've had\have are the Panasonic labeled amps sold at Allied years ago. They use a lovely potted trans and they look to be made by the same manufacturer that did Sansui.

Vintage amps for doner parts used to be economical but pricing is now such that the Dynaco reissue is a good value.

The UK had many great output transformer companies as well as complete amplifier producers. Nearly all made an EL84 offering.

Aren't there any UK based DIY valve forums to check in at? It seems reasonable that someone closer to you might have exactly what you need.
