Class B Mixed-Mode Operation
I am listening to the amp of the attached schematic. It is interesting! Mixed-Mode [in the title] means that each of the two tubes alternates its Class B operation between Normal and Inverted. Please note the following:
1.The input power toroid transformer steps up the voltage to the physical grids of the triodes.
2.The load at the Triodes' cathodes is a dual voice coil woofer. The impedance of neach coil is 8 Ohms.
3. In operation, the shaded signals [1/2 the input AC signal] are offered to the physical grids. Focus on their depicted maximum /minimum values.
3a. Triode [T2] operates normally. The voltage is positive at its physical plate relative to its cathode. The voltage is negative at its physical grid relative to its cathode.
3b. Triode [T1] operates inverted mode during the same time interval of 1/2 the AC signal. Its plate [physical grid] is positive relative to its cathode. Its grid [physical plate] is negative relative to its cathode.
4. Triode [T2] operates inverted and Triode [T1] operates normal when the input signals to their grids are simultaneously reversed. They alternate..and this arrangement plays loud music which is subjectively agreeable.
There are three additional connections of the triodes' physical plates:
A. No connection; meaning the plates float. The resultant operation of each physical triode is that of a diode. Plays loud music which is subjectively agreeable.
B. The plates are connected to +15 Vdc; meaning normal triode operation. Plays a subjectively best and loudest music
C. The physical plates of the triodes are connected to [-15Vdc to -6 Vdc]. The resultant status is inverted operation for both triodes. Sound quality as in bullet [A].
