Contan Audio from Melbourne Aus, any info?

Hi,

I purchased this KT88 based power amp from a HiFi shop back in the late 90's. I had an article on it from a mag but have lost it.

All i know is....its 70wpc, made in Melbourne Australia and the plate is 24k gold.

Anyone have more info on Contan audio in general?

AFAIK, Contan made valve amps and kits for a few years in Melbourne, Australia, in the 1990's and then went out of business.

Makes sense. Its pretty well made for low volume production and has certainly been reliable.

Gone the way of so many boutique HiFi businesses. Bit like the wine industry...How do you make a small fortune? Start with a large one!

Schematic for Contan mu-follower preamp - MOSFET version

I recently bought a Contan mu-follower preamp - I think that mine was assembled as a kit. It uses a 12AU7 as the triode, with IRF740s as the upper half of each mu-follower.

I've cleaned it up and fired it up and it works but is in need of some love. Before I tackle it, would anyone have a schematic of this version?

By way of background, details of the original (using a 12AU7 and a 6DJ8) were published in 1994 in Electronics Australia (a Google search for "VALVE PREAMP FOR AUDIOPHILES - The MESSUI Place" will deliver the pdf). However, the unit on my bench uses an IRF740 in place of the 6DJ8 in the original design.

Any leads greatly appreciated.
