hi

i am using a stock st70 with a pair of altec 890c boleros and a denon cd player with volume instead of preamp, the mids and highs are really nice, but i think the bass could be stronger. is this typical with st70, with tubes, or atypical? is there anything that can be done about it?

thanks

From Audiokarma.org

The only really noticeable annomily is a hole in bass response centered at ~55-60 Hz, where the ABR and woofer operate out of phase with one another. And even this has its advantage by making frequencies below that seem louder (kind of like a built in Contour button), and it eliminates “boom” and tubby sounding bass. Under normal listening condition, it is not noticable, but it was apparent when I was playing test tones.

People sometimes mistake a lack of boomy sloppy bass as a lack of bass.
