Technically it is not needed, but it will help reduce noise if the pot has some momentary dead spots, and may save the 5842 if the pot goes open. In a perfect world with a perfect pot, the resistor can contribute some added thermal noise. In the real world you shouldn't notice it. I would leave it in there.
